How do you apply to the Medical University of Vienna?

Admission to Medicine and Dentistry runs in three steps: the admissions test, the ranking of results and the admission itself. Every prospective student must first take the national admissions test MedAT; the test and the allocation of study places are organised on the national site medizinstudieren.at.[5]

Applicants are ranked by their test results and admitted if their rank is within the number of available places. For Human Medicine you choose a quota: Austrian, EU or non-EU. At least 95% of the places are reserved for the Austrian and EU quotas, at least 75% for the Austrian quota, and the non-EU quota may receive at most 5%.[8] Austria has 1,950 study places in Human Medicine and Dentistry together.[10]

The required documents depend on your nationality and the country of your school-leaving certificate. The special university entrance qualification can require supplementary examinations, especially in Latin.[5] Deadlines for the MedAT are set on the national site, and the university lists admission periods for other programmes; we give no dates here.

Which language level do you need?

The language of instruction in Medicine and Dentistry is German. For admission you need proof of German at level C1 (CEFR, the European scale from A1 to C2) plus the general and special university entrance qualification.[5]

If you do not yet have C1, you can take the required supplementary German examination in the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU). At the time of your application you need German at least at level A2. The VWU offers intensive courses and supplementary examinations in German, biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.[11] The master’s in Medical Informatics is taught in English and requires English proof, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 87.[9]
