German Grade Calculator: Convert Your GPA to the German Scale
Unofficial estimate. Most German universities and uni-assist use this formula, but some apply their own tables and pass marks differ by institution — always confirm with the university you apply to.
How the Modified Bavarian Formula Works
The Modified Bavarian Formula (modifizierte bayerische Formel) is the official conversion method standardised by the German Conference of Education Ministers (KMK) and used by uni-assist and most German universities to evaluate international transcripts:
German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nx) / (Nmax − Nmin)
Where Nmax is the best possible grade in your system, Nmin is the lowest passing grade, and Nx is your grade. The result is capped between 1.0 (best) and 4.0 (lowest pass).
Worked example: An Indian student with a CGPA of 8.2 on a 10-point scale (pass mark 4.0): 1 + 3 × (10 − 8.2) / (10 − 4) = 1 + 3 × 0.3 = 1.9 — a “good” German grade, comfortably above typical Master’s admission cut-offs of 2.5.
What German Grades Mean

Many competitive Master’s programs expect a converted grade of 2.5 or better; highly selective programs (medicine, top technical universities) often expect 1.5–2.0.
Grading Scales by Country
The formula needs your system’s best grade and lowest passing grade. These are the values most commonly applied — but pass marks vary by university, so check your own transcript or grading key:

Is this calculator official?
No online converter is official. This tool applies the same Modified Bavarian Formula that uni-assist and most German universities use, so it is a reliable estimate — but the university you apply to makes the binding conversion, and a few use their own tables.
What German grade do I need for a Master’s in Germany?
Most programs ask for a converted grade of 2.5 or better; competitive programs at TU9 universities often expect 1.5–2.0. Some programs admit primarily on grade, others weigh motivation letters, GRE scores or work experience.
Why does my converted grade look worse than my GPA suggests?
The German scale is compressed: everything between “best possible” and “just passed” maps onto 1.0–4.0. If your system has a low pass mark (e.g. 40%), mid-range grades convert more favourably than in systems with a high pass mark (e.g. China’s 60%).
Does uni-assist convert my grades automatically?
Yes. When you apply through uni-assist (€75 for the first program, €30 for each additional one), your preliminary review documentation (VPD) states your converted German grade. Use this calculator beforehand to gauge your admission chances.
