About INTEC
INTEC’s own history page says the first talks took place in April–May 1971 in Santiago de los Caballeros, among university professors who wanted a small institution for postgraduate programmes in non-traditional areas, continuing education and research. It started on 9 October 1972 with three postgraduate programmes (Industrial Engineering, Economics, and Business Administration) and, according to the page, became the first institution in the country to offer postgraduate degrees. Seven undergraduate programmes followed in July 1973.[2]
INTEC teaches in quarterly periods of 12 weeks.[3] The university lists accreditations including ABET, MESCYT, IACBE, CNEIP and CAAM-HP on its home page,[7] and says it was the first Dominican university accredited by the Dominican Association for Self-study and Accreditation (ADAAC).[2]
How is INTEC ranked?
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, INTEC is in the 1401+ band, as is PUCMM.[5] In the QS Latin America & Caribbean Rankings 2027 (published 1 October 2026) INTEC is in the 161–170 band among 517 ranked institutions;[6] the previous regional edition placed it in the 191–200 band.[9]
For comparison, an INTEC press release of 18 June 2025 placed the university in the 1201–1400 band of the world ranking and described it as one of only two Dominican universities in it; the page labels the edition inconsistently (2025 in the headline, 2026 in the text).[10] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one band as one view. What can you study at INTEC?
Undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are offered in five academic areas:[7]
- Engineering (including international degree programmes)
- Basic and Environmental Sciences
- Health Sciences
- Social Sciences and Humanities
- Economy and Business
The site also lists concentrations, continuing education courses and diplomas, institutional mobility and a Confucius Institute.[7] Medicine, Psychology and the “2+2” and “3+2” programmes add a group interview to admission, and Industrial Design requires a portfolio.[11]
How much does INTEC cost for international students?
| Admission cohort | Dominicans (RD$) | Foreign residents (RD$) | Foreigners (US$) | Foreigners, Medicine (US$) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Admitted before 2022-T3 | 4,605 | 5,625 | 191 | 337 |
| Admitted from 2022-T3 | 4,815 | 5,625 | 191 | 337 |
| Admitted from 2025-T2 | 4,950 | 5,800 | 197 | 346 |
This is INTEC’s “Tuition and Services Fees Schedule · Effective from May 2026”, row “Quarterly registration”. INTEC applies different rates by group, according to the period of admission, and updates them annually (RD$ is the Dominican peso; T3 = third quarter).[4] The 2026 table does not say the unit. A superseded 2022 schedule on the same page used the same label with “By Credit”, so the amounts most likely are per credit; confirm this with INTEC before budgeting.[4]
Other fees in the same schedule for foreigners admitted from 2025-T2: Engineering laboratory and “other careers” laboratory US$170 each, Medicine/Dentistry laboratory US$380, and “English without credit” US$450.[4]
Admission-process payments
For foreigners the admission steps list: right of admission US$129.36, admission test US$38.50, English placement test US$38.50 and POMA test US$35, with dollar amounts paid at the day’s exchange rate.[11] Students with US citizenship or residence can find information on federal loans, Sallie Mae loans and veterans’ benefits on INTEC’s page for international financial assistance.[12]
How do you apply to INTEC?
The admissions page gives three steps: fill in the online admission application, which creates your student ID and password; hand in the required documents at the Admissions Department; and pay the admission fees.[11] The tests you take depend on your candidate type. You can apply to skip the admission test if you took the PAA, ePAA or SAT, and to skip the English placement test if you took the TOEFL, ELASH, TOEIC, IELTS or Cambridge test less than two years ago.[11]
Documents for foreign secondary-school graduates
Photocopy of the passport; secondary-school diploma and transcripts, apostilled or legalised; a certificate from the Dominican Ministry of Education validating the diploma; a medical certificate for academic purposes; the admission payment receipt; two 2×2 photos; an apostilled birth certificate; and registration for the admission test (PAA), the ELASH English test (if you do not take the PAA) and the POMA test.[11] Documents that are not in Spanish must be translated; the legalisation route depends on whether the issuing country belongs to the Hague Convention.[11]
We give no deadlines here because they change every year; INTEC publishes a degree offering calendar and an admission calendar.[11]
Which language level do you need?
All INTEC curricula have two English requirements: taking English subjects at the level set for the programme, and reaching a set score on the ELASH test for graduation. New students take ELASH during admission. The test covers listening comprehension, language and reading, on a scale of 40 to 200 points.[8] International tests (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge, VEC) are accepted as equivalents if the original certificate is less than two years old.[8]
The pages we read do not state a required Spanish level or the language of instruction. They do require translations of foreign documents into Spanish,[11] so ask the admissions office whether proof of Spanish is needed.
