About Tallinn University of Technology

TalTech was founded on 17 September 1918, when the Estonian Engineering Society opened “Special Engineering Courses”. It became a state institution in 1920, received university status in 1936 as Tallinn Technical Institute and was renamed Tallinn Technical University in 1938.[2] The short name TalTech replaced the earlier abbreviations on 17 September 2018.[2]

Its current structure has five units: the School of Engineering, the School of Business and Governance, the School of Science, the School of Information Technologies and the Estonian Maritime Academy.[2] In 2008 it took over International University Audentes, and in 2017 the Estonian Information Technology College became part of it.[2]

TalTech reports about 9,929 students, 8.4% of them international, and says it is the largest university in the capital, with a campus in the Mustamäe district and more than 82,000 alumni.[1]

Not the same as Tallinn University: Estonia’s ranking also lists Tallinn University (Tallinna Ülikool), a separate institution. TalTech is the technical university.

What can you study at Tallinn University of Technology?

TalTech offers 4 bachelor’s and 14 master’s programmes in English, in four fields: information technologies, business and governance, engineering and maritime sciences.[1] Doctoral studies are also offered.[1] The fee schedule groups English-taught programmes by school: Business and Governance, Engineering, Information Technologies and the Estonian Maritime Academy.[4] It lists no separate rate for the School of Science for students enrolling in 2026/27 or later.[4] The full programme list is on the TalTech programmes page.

How much does Tallinn University of Technology cost in 2026/27?

TalTech’s tuition regulation sets semester fees for full-time English-taught programmes. The table shows the rate for students who enrol in 2026/27 or later.[4]

Part-time students pay per ECTS credit (for example €100 for Business and Governance and €120 for Information Technologies).[4] The regulation was approved on 9 December 2025, amended on 16 June 2026 and is in force from 1 August 2026.[4]

Who pays?

Students from outside the European Union pay the fees for two semesters before enrolment.[4] Under the regulation, citizens of an EU member state and permanent residents of Estonia are exempt from the semester fee in English-taught programmes of the Schools of Engineering, Information Technologies and Science and of the Estonian Maritime Academy.[4] TalTech’s admissions page puts it as: studies are tuition-fee free for citizens of EU/EEA states, except in the School of Business and Governance.[1] The two statements differ slightly (EU versus EU/EEA), so confirm your case with the admissions office. Students who study free of charge but miss the required credit load pay €50 per ECTS credit for the shortfall.[4]
