How do you apply to the University of Miami?
UM’s testing policy page says the university requires SAT or ACT scores for fall 2026 entry; official scores are needed only from admitted students who enrol, and self-reported scores can be entered in the Common Application or the Applicant Portal. First-year applicants who graduate from a high school outside the U.S. may choose whether to submit scores. Applicants to Frost School of Music performance programmes, Bachelor of Fine Arts programmes and the School of Architecture, and transfer applicants with 24 or more postsecondary credits, are also exempt. The page does not address fall 2027.[6]
Non-native English speakers must also meet the English requirement below. The English page also lists completion of Level 5 of UM’s Intensive English Program among the ways to meet the requirement.[7] We give no deadlines here because they change every year and differ by programme. The pages we read did not describe the F-1 student visa process, so ask UM admissions.
Which English level do you need?
UM lists the following as benchmarks for undergraduate applicants and says competitive applicants generally score above them:[7]
| Test | Benchmark |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT, taken before 21 January 2026 | 80 (0–120 scale) |
| TOEFL iBT, taken on or after 21 January 2026 | 4.5 (1–6 scale) |
| IELTS | 6.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 |
Scores are valid for two years from the original exam date.[7] The requirement may be waived, for example for applicants with an A or B in AP English or IB English (Higher Level), three or more years at a U.S. high school or at a non-U.S. high school with English as the language of instruction, an official SAT evidence-based reading and writing score of 650 or higher, or an official ACT English score of 27 or higher. Waiver requests are made with a form in the Applicant Portal.[7]
