About Amirkabir University of Technology
The university’s history page says the first students were admitted in 1957 and that the institution, then Tehran Polytechnic, officially began work in 1958 with five engineering majors: electronics and electrical, mechanical, textile, chemistry and civil engineering. After the 1979 revolution, Tehran Polytechnic became a university and was named Amirkabir University of Technology after Amirkabir Farahani, a figure of Iran’s modern history.[2]
The sources differ on the earlier date. The same history page says the initial core was formed in October 1956 from the Civil Engineering Institute and the Higher Art Center, while the international admission site dates the initial establishment to October 1927. Wikipedia gives 1928 as a technical academy and 1956 as the year it became a full university.[2][4][7] We use 1958, the year teaching began.
The main campus is in central Tehran.[2] Wikipedia lists affiliated campuses at Mahshahr, Bandar Abbas (coastal and marine) and Garmsar, and a Kish campus; the university’s website links to an international campus on Kish Island.[7][6]

Fees are received in euros; accommodation, meals and insurance are not included. The university reserves the right to change tuition fees. The page does not name an academic year and carries no date.[3]
On top of this, non-Persian-speaking students pay €550 for the full Persian course package of four levels. If the placement test shows you need less, the fee is reduced accordingly.[4] The consular page also requires an accident insurance policy (Hayate Amn) for the length of your studies when you apply for the residence permit; it does not state an amount.[10]
How do you apply to Amirkabir University of Technology?
International applicants apply through the university’s International Applicants Admission System at admission.aut.ac.ir. The minimum school GPA for a bachelor’s is above 60%; for a master’s or PhD both the school GPA must be above 60% and the bachelor’s or master’s GPA above 70%. Academic documents must be approved by Iran’s Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.[4]
- Upload the required documents in the admission system within the stated period; the admission committee reviews the file and announces the result in the system. A positive result brings an admission letter.[4]
- After admission, register at saorg.ir (the national system for non-Iranian students), obtain a tracking code and send it through the university’s International Students Affairs request system. The site gives about 4 to 6 weeks for the qualification approval and then 2 to 4 weeks for the visa application handled by the consular office.[4]
- Take the online Persian placement test and complete the Persian courses before the academic year starts.[4]
- Register each semester after the student number is issued and tuition is paid.[4]
The student visa is valid for a single entry. After arriving in Iran you apply for an academic residence permit, which is issued for the length of your studies and then allows unrestricted entry and exit. The permit requires your passport, a photo, the valid student visa and an accident insurance policy.[10] We give no deadlines here because they change every year; the admission system shows the current ones.
Which language level do you need?
Non-Persian-speaking students at Amirkabir must complete Persian courses before they take subject classes. The programme has four levels: beginner (A1), elementary (A2), intermediate (B1) and advanced (B2). Postgraduate applicants who are Persian learners must reach at least the intermediate level and obtain the certificate. Students without prior Persian start at the beginner level; anyone with proof of earlier Persian (such as a certificate) takes an in-person assessment of speaking, listening, reading and writing to decide the starting level.[5]
The admission site adds that applicants take an online placement test after admission and must finish the Persian courses before the start of the academic year.[4] The pages we read do not mention an English-language test for admission.
