About the University of Liechtenstein

The University of Liechtenstein traces back to the Evening Technical College Vaduz, founded in 1961. It became the Liechtenstein School of Engineering in 1985, the University of Applied Sciences Liechtenstein (a foundation under public law) in 1997, and took its current name under the Act on the University of Liechtenstein, in force from 1 February 2011. The right to award doctoral degrees was granted in 2008.[2]

The university has 677 students in its consecutive programmes (as of 15 November 2025), 203 permanent employees and nine degree programmes. It is organised in the Liechtenstein School of Architecture, the Liechtenstein Business School, the Liechtenstein Business Law School, the Liechtenstein Executive School for professional education and the Liechtenstein Undergraduate and Graduate School.[1]

Not the same as UFL: Liechtenstein has two separate universities in our list. This page is about the University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz (uni.li), which offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes in architecture and business. The Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL, ufl.li) is a different institution in Triesen with doctoral programmes in law and medical sciences.

How is the University of Liechtenstein ranked?

We could not confirm a position for the University of Liechtenstein in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (published 18 June 2026). QS blocks automated access to its own site, and no source we could read names a position, so we do not give one. Our Liechtenstein table shows “Not confirmed” for this reason.

The only ranking statement we could read is old. On 24 July 2020 the Liechtenstein government portal reported that the university had again achieved top results in the U-Multirank 2020 edition (1,711 universities in 96 countries), in particular for research, international orientation and international cooperation, and employability of graduates close to 100 percent.[10] That is a statement from 2020, not a current position. Rankings differ by publisher and year. How we compile rankings.

What can you study at the University of Liechtenstein?

The university lists nine programmes in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies:[1]

  • BSc Architecture: 6 semesters, 180 ECTS, taught in German.[4]
  • BSc Business Administration: 6 semesters, 180 ECTS, full- or part-time, taught mainly in German; the specialisation tracks are described as taught almost exclusively in English, so the page is not fully consistent.[5]
  • MSc Architecture: 4 semesters, 120 ECTS, taught in English.[6]
  • MSc Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership: 4 semesters, 120 ECTS, taught in German.[11]
  • MSc Innovative Finance: 4 semesters full-time, 120 ECTS, entirely in English.[8]
  • MSc Information Systems: 4 semesters, 120 ECTS, taught in English.[7]
  • Doctoral programmes in Architecture and Planning, Business Economics and Business Law.[1]

The university names accreditation by AACSB and RIBA and by the Swiss Accreditation Council.[1]

How much does the University of Liechtenstein cost?

Student groupTuition per semester
EU/EEA and Swiss nationals, holders of a Liechtenstein permanent residence or settlement permit, holders of an EU/EEA or Swiss MaturaCHF 950
Students from other countries who do not meet these criteriaCHF 1,250

The fees apply to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes; CHF 10 per semester of the fee goes to the student union. The fee page names no academic year, so confirm the current amount before you apply.[3] Administrative services, decisions or use of infrastructure outside the tuition fee may be charged separately.[3] Applications also carry a non-refundable processing fee of CHF 100.[9]

Tuition is only part of the cost. For living costs in Liechtenstein, see our Liechtenstein guide.

How do you apply to the University of Liechtenstein?

Applications go through the university’s online application tool.[9]

  1. Check the programme page and the Student Regulations.
  2. Create an account with your personal email address and complete the application, uploading scans as PDF or JPG. A submitted application cannot be edited.
  3. Pay the non-refundable CHF 100 processing fee; processing starts only after it is received.
  4. You receive an email: pre-approved, admitted or rejected. Admitted applicants get a provisional offer and a semester invoice, and paying the tuition confirms the place.
  5. Send certified copies of your documents by the first week of the semester. Do not send originals.[9]

Bachelor’s applicants need a recognised school-leaving certificate (for example a general or subject-specific higher education entrance certificate, a vocational Matura or an equivalent international certificate), a passport copy and a photo.[12] Master’s applicants need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, a transcript, a CV, a letter of motivation, passport and photo; the Architecture master also requires a portfolio.[9][6] Doctoral applicants use a separate form.[9]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year and differ by programme and semester. Check the admission page.

Which language level do you need?

Requirements depend on the programme. All documents must be submitted in German or English; other languages need officially certified translations.[9]

  • Bachelor’s (general rule): applicants with a non-German school certificate or a non-native German background must prove German at level C1 on the CEFR scale (the European scale from A1 to C2; C1 is advanced). Accepted proofs include Goethe-Zertifikat C1, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule and TestDaF. English is required only for the BSc in Business Administration.[12]
  • BSc Business Administration: English at B2 for all applicants; German at C1 if your native language is not German or your secondary school diploma was not taught in German.[5]
  • MSc Architecture, MSc Information Systems, MSc Innovative Finance: English at B2.[6][7][8]
  • MSc Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership: English at B2 (for example TOEFL or IELTS, or equivalent) and, if German is not your native language, German at C1.[11]

For the BSc in Architecture the programme page names only the entrance qualification (Matura, Abitur or equivalent); the general bachelor rule above asks for German C1 where it applies.[4][12]
