About the Belarusian State Medical University

BSMU describes its beginning in 1921, when Belarusian State University opened with a medical faculty. In 1930 that faculty became an independent institution, the Minsk State Medical Institute, which received the name Belarusian State Medical University in 2001.[2] The Medical Faculty for International Students says that the institute welcomed its first eight international students from Africa in September 1964.[7]

The university reports 9 faculties and 3 institutes. The home page gives “8700+ students”, while another passage on the same page speaks of “over 7000 students, postgraduates, clinical residents” in total, so the counts follow different definitions; we cannot reconcile them.[1] Wikipedia gives 6,513 students and over 2,000 foreign citizens from more than 50 countries without a date.[8]

Not the same as BSU: Belarusian State University (BSU) is a separate university in Minsk. BSMU started inside it in 1921 but has been independent since 1930.[2]

How is BSMU ranked?

We could not confirm a position for BSMU in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026. Xuanxiao, an aggregator that names the edition, lists BSMU as not ranked in QS 2027 and as 2001+ in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.[4] The QS website blocks automated access, so we could not read the table there.

BSMU’s own news items report other rankings. In its December 2025 summary it reports 3422nd place in the Webometrics ranking for 2025, third place among Belarus’s leading universities in the Moscow “Three University Missions” ranking and the 1401–1500 group, and the 351–400 category in the BRICS ranking.[9] These are the university’s own statements. Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings. For the national picture, see universities in Belarus.
