About Huazhong University of Science and Technology

HUST describes itself as a comprehensive research university in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. It took part in the former “985” Project and was among the first universities approved under the national “Double First-Class” initiative.[1] Wikipedia traces its history to the Huazhong Institute of Technology, established in Wuhan in 1952 (the article’s own history section gives 1953).[6]

The current university was formed on 26 May 2000 by merging the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and Wuhan Science and Technology Vocational College, according to a HUST school’s history page.[8] Tongji Medical College is now part of HUST; the university lists it among its associated links.[7]

The main campus lies close to East Lake, with a satellite medical campus in the Hankou business district across the Yangtze. The university offers 10 major categories of subjects, with engineering and medicine as its two main strengths.[1]
