Scholarships for newly admitted students

  • Hanyang International Scholarship Program (HISP): 100%, 70% or 50% tuition reduction, based on the document evaluation or artwork, for eight semesters if a GPA of 2.5 is kept each semester.[3]
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5 earns a 30% reduction in the first semester.[3]
  • TOPIK: level 6 earns 100% and level 5 earns 50% in the first semester; graduates of Korean high schools are not eligible for the level 5 award.[3]
  • Hanyang IIE (Korean language programme): level 6 earns 100% and level 5 earns 50% in the first semester.[3]
  • Alumni family scholarship: 30% for freshmen whose parent graduated from Hanyang, for eight semesters with a GPA of 2.5.[3]

These scholarships cannot be combined with other on-campus scholarships; with several awards the largest applies. They are selected during admission, with no separate application.[3]

Scholarships for enrolled students

The Hanyang International Excellence Awards go to enrolled international students with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 in the previous semester and a valid TOPIK score, refunding 30%, 50%, 70% or 100% of one semester’s tuition. Applications open in early March and early September through the university portal. The page is in Korean.[7]

How do you apply to Hanyang University?

The 2027 Spring guide describes six steps: online application through the Office of International Affairs site, submission of documents by post only, document evaluation, an artwork review and interview for relevant departments only, announcement of the result on the same site, and tuition payment.[3] The guide’s key announcements include that on-site submission is not accepted.[3]

Eligible freshmen hold foreign nationality and have parents who are both foreign nationals; they must have graduated or be expected to graduate from high school. Transfer applicants need two completed years at a four-year university or a vocational college degree. Home-schooling, cyber learning, adult education and high-school equivalency tests are not acceptable.[3]

The guide is also published in Korean and Chinese; the Korean version prevails if translations conflict. We give no deadlines here because they change every year and differ by programme; the guide’s schedule section has them. Download the guides from the admission page of the Office of International Affairs.[5]

Which language level do you need?

Korean track (most departments): applicants must satisfy one Korean standard, TOPIK or TOPIK iBT level 4 or higher, or a Hanyang Institute of International Education (IIE) transcript at level 4 or higher.[3] Admission is decided on academic ability first. Accepted applicants who do not yet meet the Korean standard may be admitted but must take a leave of absence and study Korean until they do, then re-enrol and start the degree.[3]

ENG departments: departments marked ENG teach in English and are exempt from the Korean standard. Applicants submit an English proficiency test score; for Data Science the guide names TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.0 and says there is an English interview. Check each ENG department’s note for its own requirement.[3]

Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) students follow the Korean standard set by NIIED instead.[3]
