Cuttington University is a private university founded in 1889 by the Episcopal Church; its undergraduate campus is in Suakoko, Bong County, and its graduate school is in Monrovia.[1][2] It calls itself the oldest private, coeducational, four-year, degree-granting institution in sub-Saharan Africa; that is the university’s own claim.[1] We could not confirm a place in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and the university publishes no enrolment figure on the pages we read.
The undergraduate admissions page lists tuition of US$35 per credit hour plus a US$232.50 registration fee. The page carries a © 2024 notice but no academic year.[3] Applicants need five ordinary-level WAEC or GCE subjects including English and Mathematics, and may have to pass the university’s entrance exam.[3]

About Cuttington University
The university’s history page says the Cape Palmas Missionary District of the Episcopal Church founded the Hoffman Institute in 1889 under Bishop Samuel D. Ferguson, and that a divinity school was added so the school became Cuttington Collegiate and Divinity School. It is named for Robert Fulton Cutting, who gave US$5,000 toward land in 1885.[2] It was incorporated to grant degrees in 1922 and closed in 1929. It reopened at Suakoko in 1949, and the Liberian government donated 1,500 acres.[2]
The college closed in May 1990 because of the civil war, and an “in exile” programme was run meanwhile. An Act of 20 July 2005 made it Cuttington University.[2] Wikipedia gives a different account of the war years and says the main campus is about 120 miles north of Monrovia; we rely on the university’s own page for dates.[6]
Today the undergraduate programme is at Suakoko, the Graduate School of Professional Studies is in Monrovia, and a Junior College is in Kakata.[1] The graduate page gives the Monrovia address as Tubman Boulevard in Sinkor, while the site’s location list says Congo Town; we could not reconcile the two.[4]

These amounts come from the university’s undergraduate admissions and fees page, which shows a © 2024 notice but does not name an academic year.[3] The page’s web address contains “copy-of-junior”, so it may be a copied template; confirm the figures with the admissions office before you pay.
Payment at registration
The two official pages differ. The admissions and fees page says regular students pay 75% of tuition plus all non-tuition fees at registration, and donor-scholarship students pay 25% of tuition plus non-tuition fees.[3] The separate tuition-and-fees page says a minimum of 30% of tuition plus the registration fee is due, and lists no amounts.[7]
We found no published fee schedule for graduate programmes; the graduate page refers to a fees section that gave no amounts.[4]
How do you apply to Cuttington University?
- Undergraduate: you need a diploma from a Ministry of Education-recognised high school with a “C” (2.00) or 70% average and three school years each of English, Mathematics, Social Science and electives. Documents include the WAEC scores, transcripts, an application fee receipt (amount not stated) and the admission form.[3]
- WAEC/GCE: only Division I and II certificates are accepted, with at least five ordinary-level subjects including English and Mathematics. Division I candidates are exempt from placement exams, and WAEC (Liberia) candidates with Levels II and III may sit the entrance exam. Applicants who fail may take a one-year remedial programme and re-sit.[3]
- International applicants: add evidence of financial support, proof of English proficiency, notarised translations where needed and national test scores.[3]
- Graduate: the graduate page names no entry criteria; it gives the admissions contact and says master’s candidates must keep a “B” average to graduate.[4]
Apply through the online portal linked from the admissions page, or write to admissions@cu.edu.lr. When we checked, the “Apply & Enroll” page still showed unedited template text, so use the admissions page or email. We give no deadlines because they change each year.[8][9]
Which language level do you need?
The admissions page says admitted students are screened with placement exams in English and Mathematics.[8] International applicants must show proof of English proficiency, but the page does not name accepted tests or scores.[3] Ask the admissions office which evidence it accepts.
