About the University of Mandalay
According to Wikipedia, the university started in 1925 as Mandalay College, an affiliate of Rangoon University. It closed during the Second World War, reopened in 1947 and became an independent university in 1958. A 1964 act limited it to liberal arts, sciences and law, and its medical faculty became the Institute of Medicine, Mandalay. It was renamed Mandalay Arts and Science University in 1978 and Mandalay University in 1988.[1]
The university’s own Rector’s message calls it one of the two earliest universities founded in Myanmar, with Yangon University the earliest; it gives no founding year.[6] Its campus on University Drive includes a convocation hall, a guest house for 30 guests and eight student halls, and a University Research Centre opened in 2015 with six science laboratories.[2]
How is the University of Mandalay ranked?
We could not confirm a position in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (published 18 June 2026). The aggregator xuanxiao.org lists 1,504 universities for that edition and offers no Myanmar entry in its country filter.[4] Wikipedia reports that a 2017 survey by the National Education Policy Commission ranked the university first among arts and science universities in Myanmar; we have not read the survey itself.[1]

The admission page describes two registration routes for international students.[3]
- SHARE scholarship programme: a registration form with an acceptance letter from the host university, an endorsement letter from the home university, an academic transcript in English, a valid passport copy and four recent photos.[3]
- Other scholarship programmes: a form with a recommendation from the candidate’s department, a passport copy and four passport-size photos.[3]
Candidates from universities with an MoU or MoA with the University of Mandalay can use the on-campus guest house; others may apply for the student dormitory only if places are vacant.[3] The separate “International Admission” page on the website gives no eligibility, fee or language details; it lists the university’s postal address and a contact form (mu.edu.mm/contact-us/).[5]
For domestic first-degree entry the page says applicants must have passed the Matriculation Examination and are selected by aggregate marks.[3] We give no deadlines because the pages list none.
Which language level do you need?
The pages we read do not state the language of instruction or any English or Burmese test requirement.
