About Turkmen State Medical University
According to Wikipedia, the institution began as the Turkmen State Medical Institute in 1931. It was renamed in 1981 as the Turkmen Order of Friendship of Peoples State Medical Institute and in 1997 as the State Medical Institute of Turkmenistan. In 2010 it became the Turkmen State Medical University, and in 2019 a resolution of the Mejlis (parliament) gave it the name of Myrat Garryyev.[1] IAU WHED gives 1932 as the founding year and says it acquired its present status and title in 2010.[2] The founding year therefore differs by one year between the two sources.
The university is at 18 Archabil Avenue in Ashgabat.[3] Wikipedia says it reports to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and describes it as the only medical university in Turkmenistan with more than 3,000 students.[1] The official site also mentions clinical bases, international cooperation, postgraduate study, a scientific journal and a UNESCO Club.[3]
How is Turkmen State Medical University ranked?

What can you study at Turkmen State Medical University?
The official site lists eight faculties: General Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics, Pharmaceutical, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, Postgraduate Training and Advanced Training of Doctors, Stomatological (dentistry) and Military Medical, with roughly 56 departments.[3] Wikipedia lists six (Medical, Pediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Preventive Medicine, Military Medicine),[1] and IAU WHED lists seven faculties.[2] The differences come from how the units are grouped and named; we use the official list.
IAU WHED records the specialist diploma (“Hünärmeniň diplomy”) in dentistry, medicine, paediatrics, pharmacy, health sciences, physical therapy, sanitary engineering and sports medicine.[2] We found no information about the length of the programmes. For recognition of the degree outside Turkmenistan, check with the authorities of your own country; we found no source on this.
How much does Turkmen State Medical University cost?
We found no published tuition figure. IAU WHED lists no fees for this university,[2] and the official pages we could read give none.[3]
For context only: an AKIpress report of August 2019, citing the state news agency TDH, said that higher education in Turkmenistan was moving to a paid model, with annual fees of 6,000 to 8,000 manats at the institutes it named. This university was not among its examples, and the figures concern the 2019 intake of domestic students.[5] Do not read them as the current fee here. Ask the university directly for current amounts.
How do you apply to Turkmen State Medical University?
We did not find a published admission procedure for international applicants (entrance exam, documents, quotas, government agreements or visa steps) on the pages we could read, and IAU WHED lists no admission requirements.[2] We do not guess one. We give no deadlines.
The university lists the address 18 Archabil Avenue, Ashgabat, telephone +993 12 48-98-51 and e-mail tdlutm@tdlu.edu.tm on its website.[3] Also ask the education authorities of your own country whether study in Turkmenistan is arranged through a government agreement.
