Agostinho Neto University (UAN) is Angola’s oldest public university, based in Luanda. It descends from the General University Studies created by a decree of 21 August 1962 and has carried its present name since 1985.[1] Its website reports more than 23,000 students and 10 organic units: 7 faculties, 2 institutes and 1 school.[1]
We could not confirm a place in the QS World University Rankings 2027. In the January 2026 Webometrics edition UAN is the best-placed Angolan institution, 3,368th in the world.[2] Entry is through an access exam; registration for the 2025/26 exam cost 5,000 Kz for one course option and 10,000 Kz for two.[3] The exam is held in Portuguese-language subjects and the university’s pages are in Portuguese.[4]

About Agostinho Neto University
The university’s history page traces UAN to the General University Studies (Estudos Gerais Universitários, EGU) of Angola and Mozambique, created by Decreto-Lei 44.530 of 21 August 1962 and inaugurated in Luanda on 6 October 1963.[1] The EGU became the University of Luanda in 1968, a national university at independence in 1975, the University of Angola in 1976, and Agostinho Neto University on 24 January 1985, named after Angola’s first president and the university’s first rector.[1] The page gives two dates for the 1976 renaming, 28 September and 28 December.[1]
A restructuring in 2009 followed; until then UAN had been Angola’s only higher-education institution.[1] Wikipedia adds that campuses outside Luanda then became six autonomous universities.[8] Mandume ya Ndemufayo University in Lubango, covered on our Angola page, is one of the separate public universities named in the 2020 network decree.[6]
Under the 2020 network decree the units are the faculties of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Economics, Engineering, Humanities and Medicine; the Institute of Health Sciences; the Institute of Physical Education and Sports; and the School of Hotel Management and Tourism.[6] Student numbers differ by source: more than 23,000 on the university’s own site,[1] 26,000 quoted by a university official in September 2022,[7] and 18,864 full-time-equivalent students in a Times Higher Education figure shown by the aggregator xuanxiao.org.[9]
How is Agostinho Neto University ranked?
QS 2027: we could not confirm a position. The QS site blocks automated access and no readable source we found lists UAN in the 2027 edition, so we do not give a number.
Webometrics (January 2026): UAN is 3,368th worldwide and 392nd in Africa, the highest of the Angolan institutions reported by the newspaper Expansão (Universidade Internacional do Cuanza is 4,456th and Universidade Óscar Ribas 4,918th).[2] Webometrics measures the web presence and visibility of institutions, not teaching quality.
unirank (November 2021): a list of 200 African universities published by unirank placed UAN 39th in Africa, behind Mandume ya Ndemufayo University (16th) and Universidade Independente de Angola (30th) among Angolan institutions.[10] That list is over four years old. Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.
What can you study at Agostinho Neto University?
The university’s history page counts 47 licenciatura (first-degree) programmes, 8 bacharelato programmes in teacher training, 13 specialisation programmes, 31 master’s programmes and 8 doctoral programmes.[1] A September 2022 report quotes different totals: 51 undergraduate degrees, 23 master’s and 10 doctoral programmes.[7] For the 2025/26 access exam the university offered 43 licenciatura courses.[3]
The 2026 access-exam page groups the faculties in three areas, each with its own subjects:[4]
- Exact sciences: Natural Sciences and Engineering. Subjects: Portuguese, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Drawing.
- Health sciences: Medicine and the Institute of Health Sciences. Subjects: Portuguese, Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry.
- Social sciences: among others Law, Economics and Humanities. Subjects: Portuguese, History, Mathematics, General Culture.
The full course list is on the university’s undergraduate and postgraduate pages.
How much does Agostinho Neto University cost?
The university’s own pages that we read give no tuition amounts. The registration fee for the access exam is “defined annually” and published in the exam notice (edital).[4] The figures below come from press reports and may have changed. Amounts are in Kz (Angolan kwanza).
| Item | Amount | Report |
|---|---|---|
| Access-exam registration, one option | 5,000 Kz | 2025/26 exam[3] |
| Access-exam registration, two options | 10,000 Kz | 2025/26 exam[3] |
| Tuition, evening students | 15,000 Kz per month | January 2019[11] |
| Tuition, daytime students | 1,900 Kz per month | May 2020, announced for the following academic year[12] |
| Licenciatura diploma | 20,000 Kz | May 2020, announced[12] |
In January 2019 Expansão reported that only evening students paid tuition at UAN.[11] A May 2020 report on a presidential decree said daytime students would also start paying 1,900 Kz a month, with evening tuition unchanged.[12] We found no current fee schedule from the university, so confirm the present amounts with UAN. No fees for international students are published on the pages we read.
How do you apply to Agostinho Neto University?
Undergraduate entry is through the university’s access exam. Candidates must have completed secondary education or an equivalent and register either at posts designated by the university or online, following the exam notice.[4]
- Online registration: for the 2025/26 exam candidates registered at the university’s exam portal, uploaded a copy of the secondary-school certificate and a passport-style photo, received a payment reference and paid at an ATM or through Multicaixa Express.[3]
- Documents listed on the university page: secondary-school certificate, original identity card (Bilhete de Identidade) or passport, proof of payment of the fee, and where relevant an employment declaration and military or police documents.[4]
- Exam day: the 2025/26 exams were held in person at the Campus Universitário in Camama. Course changes are allowed only during the registration period and after payment.[4][3]
We give no dates because they change every year; the exam notice is linked from the admission page. The pages we read do not describe a separate procedure for international applicants, so ask the university directly. Postgraduate admission is handled by the individual programmes.
Which language do you need?
Portuguese. The access exam tests Portuguese in all three subject areas, and the university’s pages are in Portuguese.[4] The page does not say in which language the exam papers are written or in which language each course is taught, and we found no English-taught degree. No language-certificate requirement for foreign applicants is stated.[4]
