What is the Asmara College of Health Sciences?
The Asmara College of Health Sciences is a public college in Asmara.[3] In the Ministry of Information’s report of its 9th commencement, the college states that it was established in 1995 as one of the faculties of the University of Asmara and became an autonomous institution of higher education in 2005. It began with one nursing degree and two diploma programmes, medical laboratory technology and pharmacy.[1] A 2016 Ministry report counts its history from 1999, and Wikipedia gives 1999 as well; the 2017 report names 1999 as the year of the first commencement.[4][3][1]
The University of Asmara closed in 2007 and its colleges were re-established as independent institutions, according to Wikipedia’s list of universities in Eritrea. That source lists the college with 1999 as its date.[7] Times Higher Education’s Eritrea page lists the Asmara College of Health Sciences as the only institution with data in the country.[2]
How is the Asmara College of Health Sciences ranked?
Times Higher Education says Eritrea has no universities in its overall World University Rankings.[2] We could not read QS’s own pages (they block automated access) and found no press or aggregator source placing the college in the QS World University Rankings 2027, so no QS position is given. uniRank lists the college second among seven Eritrean institutions in its 2026 edition, without a score on the page we read; this is one aggregator’s ordering.[9] How we compile rankings.
What can you study at the Asmara College of Health Sciences?
In 2017 the college had four schools: Allied Health Professions, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health, with 20 programmes in total.[1] Wikipedia adds a Department of Basic and Behavioral Sciences, and lists BSc degrees in nursing, public health, pharmacy, ophthalmology, midwifery and clinical laboratory sciences, plus technician diplomas in pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy, radiology and laboratory research.[3] Wikipedia is a secondary source here and the list may be out of date.
The 2018 graduation report names master’s, first-degree and diploma qualifications, with 192 graduates in nursing, 82 in medicine, 47 in health care and 138 in other health fields.[5] A listing of news items reports that the 2015 class of 416 graduated in patient care, pharmacy, public health and health assistance.[10] We found no more recent commencement report for this college, so current programmes should be checked with the college or the Ministry of Health.
How much does the Asmara College of Health Sciences cost?
We found no fee schedule from the college or the Ministry of Education. Uni2Study, a secondary guide, states that tuition at all of Eritrea’s public colleges is free and that the state is the only funder of higher education inside the country.[6] We could not check this against an official text. No source gives fees for foreign students, so we give no figures.
How do you apply to the Asmara College of Health Sciences?
Uni2Study says there is no separate application portal for college entry: placement follows the national exam score and the government’s assessment of which sectors need graduates. It describes Eritrean students completing the final secondary year at Sawa and sitting the national exam there.[6] The page does not describe enrolment of foreign nationals, and we found no admission rules for international applicants from any official source. The college has no website that we could find, so enquiries would go through the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health. We give no deadlines.
Which language is used for teaching?
uniRank states that English is the main language of instruction in Eritrea’s higher education institutions.[9] We found no language test requirement from the college itself.
