The Eritrea Institute of Technology (EIT) is a public technological institution at Mai Nefhi, about 12 km south-west of Asmara.[1] Wikipedia gives 2003 as the year it opened, with about 5,500 students in the 2003–04 academic year, after the University of Asmara was reorganised.[1] Recent government press releases report 300 graduates of the Mai-Nefhi College of Science and 297 graduates of the Mai-Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology at their 19th commencements in July 2026.[2][3]
The institute does not appear in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and we could not confirm a place in the QS World University Rankings 2027.[4] We found no fee schedule or admission rules for foreign students on any source we could read; one secondary source states that tuition at Eritrea’s public colleges is free.[5]

What is the Eritrea Institute of Technology?
The Eritrea Institute of Technology (EIT) is a public technological institution in Mai Nefhi, about 12 km south-west of Asmara, close to the Mai Nefhi dam.[1] According to Wikipedia it opened after the University of Asmara was reorganised, and the Ministry of Education describes it as one of several efforts to spread higher education to places outside the capital.[1] The Ministry of Education provides most of its funding.[1]
Eritrea’s higher education is organised in separate specialised public colleges rather than universities. Wikipedia’s list of universities in Eritrea says there are currently no universities in the country, because the colleges of the University of Asmara, which closed in 2007, were re-established as independent institutions.[7] uniRank describes the system as made up of specialised public institutions overseen by the National Board of Higher Education.[8] These two descriptions are secondary sources; we did not find a government text on the structure.
How is the Eritrea Institute of Technology ranked?
Times Higher Education states that Eritrea does not currently have any universities in its overall World University Rankings.[4] We could not read QS’s own pages (they block automated access) and found no press or aggregator source that places the institute in the QS World University Rankings 2027, so no QS position is given here.
uniRank lists the Eritrea Institute of Technology first among seven Eritrean institutions in its 2026 edition, without a score on the page we read.[8] That is one aggregator’s ordering, not a global ranking. How we compile rankings.
What can you study at the Eritrea Institute of Technology?
Wikipedia names three colleges: Science, Engineering and Technology, and Education.[1] The two 2026 graduation releases we read give the best view of current subjects.
- Mai-Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology: on 18 July 2026 it conferred first degrees and diplomas on 297 graduates, 25% of them women. 289 completed first degrees in eight engineering departments (Agricultural, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics, Marine, Mechanical, Mining) and 8 completed diplomas in four technology fields (Computer Application, Computer Hardware and Networking, Electronics, Mining).[3]
- Mai-Nefhi College of Science: 300 graduates in its 19th commencement, 49% of them women, in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. The release says the college has graduated 4,441 students in diploma and first-degree programmes over 18 years. Its subject figures add up to 301, not 300, so treat them as approximate.[2]
- Education: Wikipedia names a college of education; no current programme list was found.[1] A news listing reports that in July 2015 the institute graduated 1,283 students in engineering, science and education.[6]
How much does the Eritrea Institute of Technology cost?
We found no fee schedule published by the institute or the Ministry of Education. Uni2Study, a secondary guide, states that tuition at all of Eritrea’s public colleges is free and that the state is the only funder of higher education inside the country.[5] The same guide says national service is officially 18 months but often lasts longer, citing Human Rights Watch.[5] We report this as that source’s statement and could not check it against an official text.
No source we read gives fees for foreign students, living costs or accommodation at Mai Nefhi, so we give no figures. For living costs in the region see our Eritrea guide.
How do you apply to the Eritrea Institute of Technology?
Uni2Study says there is no separate application portal for college entry: placement follows the national exam score and the government’s assessment of which sectors need graduates. It adds that every Eritrean student completes the final year of secondary school at the Warsay Yikealo Secondary School in Sawa and sits the national exam there.[5] That page covers Eritrean students; it does not describe how foreign nationals might enrol.[5]
We found no admission rules for international applicants from the institute, the Ministry of Education or any other official source, and the institute’s website was not reachable. If you are not an Eritrean citizen, contact the Ministry of Education or an Eritrean embassy before planning. We give no deadlines.
Which language is used for teaching?
uniRank states that English is the main language of instruction in Eritrea’s higher education institutions.[8] We found no language test requirement or accepted-certificate list from the institute itself.
