A business school, not a general university: HEC Paris teaches management and related fields. The rankings it publishes on its own page are business-school and programme rankings (Financial Times, QS business master’s and MBA rankings, French press).[2]

How is HEC Paris ranked?

HEC lists the following Financial Times results: Master in Management 2026, 5th worldwide (4th in Europe); European Business School ranking 2025, 2nd in Europe; full-time MBA 2026, 6th worldwide (4th in Europe).[2] A press report on the Financial Times results published on 7 September 2026 gives the same position for the Master in Management, 5th, down from 2nd in 2025.[8]

In the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027 HEC lists 6th worldwide (2nd in Europe) for the full-time MBA. It also lists QS 2027 rankings of business master’s programmes: 1st worldwide in finance, marketing and strategic management, and 2nd in business analytics.[2] These are rankings of single programme types, not an overall QS World University Rank. We found no QS World University Rankings 2027 position for HEC Paris in the sources we read.

In France, HEC lists 1st place for the Master in Management in the 2026 rankings of Le Figaro Étudiant and L’Étudiant.[2] The HEC page does not give a date for the page itself, so treat the list as HEC’s own selection. Rankings differ by publisher and year. How we compile rankings.

How do you apply to HEC Paris?

Master in Management (Grande École). You need at least a three-year bachelor’s degree in any field and little or no professional experience at the start of the programme.[4] The selection runs in four steps:[4]

  1. Online application with all documents uploaded before the round’s deadline.
  2. Admissibility decision by a jury, based only on the documents submitted in time.
  3. A 30-minute online interview on Zoom with programme directors and alumni, held in English.
  4. Decision, posted on the application portal and final.

Required documents include a degree or enrolment certificate, transcripts from all institutions, a one-page CV, a management test result (GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE or TageMage), an English test result, programme essays, one academic reference, a passport-style photo and the €180 application fee.[4] Applicants with a non-French bachelor’s degree can instead use the “Join a School in France” route: one application (€250) covers five French business schools, and you rank your first choice. You must pick either that route or a direct application to HEC.[4]

The admissions page we read does not describe the concours route for students from French classes préparatoires. Deadlines are listed in a calendar on the HEC page; we do not repeat them here because they change each year.[4]

MBA. HEC asks for an undergraduate degree and accepts the GMAT (including GMAT Focus), the GMAC Executive Assessment or the GRE, with no minimum score; the current class averaged 635 on the GMAT. No minimum work experience is required, but at least two years is strongly encouraged, and the Class of 2025 averaged six years.[12]

Which language level do you need?

For the Master in Management, English proof is required of all candidates: TOEIC (all four parts), TOEFL, IELTS (iBT) or a Cambridge exam. It is waived for native English speakers and for applicants who completed their entire degree in English.[4] The interview is held in English.[4] The admissions page does not list a French language requirement.[4]

For the MBA, non-native speakers without a degree from an English-taught university need one of: TOEFL C1 level (5 of 6 points), IELTS 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 on each part, TOEIC 340 in Speaking & Writing and 850 in Listening & Reading, Cambridge English 185 overall with at least 176 on each part, PTE 72 or Duolingo 135. Results must be less than two years old.[12]
