About the University of Niš

The University of Niš was founded on 15 June 1965. Its origins go back to 1960, when the first faculties in Niš (Law and Economics, Medicine and Engineering) were formed under the University of Belgrade.[1] At its founding it had 234 teachers and associates and 10,500 students.[1] The university has been housed since 1967 in a neo-Renaissance building completed in 1887 in the city centre.[1]

It has 14 faculties. Most are in Niš; the Pedagogical Faculty is in Vranje, the Technological Faculty in Leskovac and the Agricultural Faculty in Kruševac.[1] (Wikipedia’s infobox counts 13 faculties for 2023–24, so the number depends on the source and year.[6]) It is one of Serbia’s eight state universities.[7]

A university made of faculties: the University of Niš is an association of faculties. Foreign applicants apply directly to the faculty, and the faculty sets the tuition fee.[3] The same holds for English-language programmes, which each faculty announces in its own call.[4]

How is the University of Niš ranked?

We could not confirm a position for the University of Niš in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026. The ranking’s own site blocks automated access, so we read an aggregator’s copy of the 2027 table (pages covering the 791 to 1401+ bands). It lists Belgrade and Novi Sad among Serbian universities but we found no entry for Niš there.[2] That is not proof of absence, so treat the QS 2027 position as not confirmed. Wikipedia’s infobox shows an older QS band of 1201–1400 for 2023.[6]

Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.

How do you apply to the University of Niš?

Applicants apply directly to the faculty and must present original documents, copies and certified translations. A candidate may apply conditionally if recognition of documents is not finished; if recognition is refused, the application is rejected.[3]

At the Faculty of Electronic Engineering the bachelor’s route in English is: complete the application with the required documents (birth certificate, high-school certificates with notarised translation, passport copy, English certificate, proof of fee payment), sit the entrance mathematics test, take part in an interview with the Enrolment Commission, register, and complete the arrival procedure.[10] Documents go by e-mail to the faculty’s study-in-English office.[10]

Recognition of foreign diplomas

Foreign secondary-school certificates are recognised by the Agency for Qualifications of the Republic of Serbia in Belgrade.[3][10] Foreign higher-education documents are recognised through an application to the University of Niš on its form.[3] We give no deadlines here, because they change every year; read your faculty’s current call.

Which language level do you need?

For English-language programmes, the Faculty of Electronic Engineering asks for an international English certificate; without one, applicants take a written and oral English exam, and applicants from native English-speaking countries are exempt.[10] No CEFR level is named on that page. For programmes in Serbian, the Faculty of Philosophy requires proof of Serbian proficiency, obtainable through the Center for Serbian as a Foreign and Second Language; English MA applicants there do not need it.[3] Entrance exams at that faculty are generally in Serbian, except in the English, French, German and Russian departments.[3]
