The short answer

The University of Novi Sad is a state university in Vojvodina with 14 faculties and three institutes, almost 50,000 students and about 5,000 employees.[1] It is an association of faculties spread over four cities (Novi Sad, Subotica, Sombor and Zrenjanin), and international degree candidates enrol at a faculty, not at the central administration.[1][2] In the QS World University Rankings 2027 it is placed in the 1201–1400 band.[3]

About the University of Novi Sad

The University of Novi Sad was established on 28 June 1960 by a law of the National Assembly that merged earlier schools in Novi Sad. Wikipedia names older forerunners such as a seminary in Novi Sad (1740) and the Faculty of Law in Subotica (1920).[7] It is one of Serbia’s eight state universities.[9]

Today it has 14 faculties (among them Philosophy, Agriculture, Law, Technology, Economics, Technical Sciences, Medicine, Sciences, Civil Engineering and the Academy of Arts) and three institutes.[1] The seat is in Novi Sad; faculties are also in Subotica, Sombor and Zrenjanin.[1] The university states that it has almost 50,000 students, about 5,000 employees and around 320 accredited programmes; the page has no date.[1]

A university made of faculties: as at the other Serbian state universities, the central university is an umbrella over its faculties. Its own guide says that enrolment of international degree-seeking students is done at faculty level and advises candidates to contact the faculty of their choice.[2] Fees, entrance exams and documents therefore differ from faculty to faculty.

We found no readable fee schedule for the other faculties. For living costs, see our Serbia guide.

How do you apply to the University of Novi Sad?

Apply to the faculty, not to the university centre. The central administration does not handle foreign candidates’ admissions.[8] The university’s guide lists an international officer for each faculty.[2]

  • Economics and Business in English (Faculty of Economics): apply online under the same rules as Serbian citizens. Required: a nostrified high-school diploma (or proof that nostrification is in progress), a valid passport and health insurance for the study year. The entrance exam is taken in English and can be sat electronically or at a Serbian diplomatic-consular mission.[5]
  • Medicine in English (Faculty of Medicine): submit the documents to the Secretariat for Studies in English, pass the entrance exams in biology and chemistry, and register if you are on the ranked list.[4]

Recognition of foreign diplomas

Candidates without a Serbian high-school diploma first have their documents recognised by the Agency for Qualifications of the Republic of Serbia. Foreign higher-education documents are recognised through the university’s recognition portal.[8] Check the current call of your faculty for dates; we give no deadlines here because they change every year.

Which language level do you need?

Requirements are set by the faculty. For the Economics and Business bachelor’s in English, the faculty asks for proof of English at level B1 or higher from a licensed institution; candidates from countries where English is official, or who completed four years of secondary education in English, are exempt.[5] For Medicine in English, applicants submit a certificate of English competence; certificates from foreign-language schools or institutes are accepted, and applicants from native English-speaking countries are exempt.[4] B1 is intermediate on the CEFR scale, the European scale from A1 to C2. The Medicine page does not name a level. For programmes taught in Serbian, ask the faculty which Serbian proficiency proof it accepts.
