About National Taiwan University of Science and Technology

NTUST was founded on 1 August 1974 as the National Taiwan Institute of Technology, the first institution of its kind in Taiwan’s technical and vocational education system. It added master’s programmes in 1979 and doctoral programmes in 1982, and on 1 August 1997 it was upgraded to university status and renamed National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, known as Taiwan Tech.[1]

The university’s history page names six colleges, engineering, electrical and computer engineering, management, design, liberal arts and social sciences, and applied science, and gives 5,605 undergraduates, 4,902 graduate students and 415 full-time faculty (without a year). It has five campuses of 29.44 hectares in total; the main Taipei campus covers about 10 hectares.[1] Wikipedia lists seven colleges including a College of Intellectual Property Studies, which also appears in the fee schedule.[5][3]

Not the same as NTU: NTUST (Taiwan Tech) and National Taiwan University (NTU) are separate universities in Taipei with separate admissions. See our Taiwan university guide.

  • Undergraduate: international applicants can enter in the fall semester only, with no spring entry. Only the International Advanced Technology Program and the International Semiconductor Processing and Equipment Engineering Program are taught in English; all other programmes are taught in Chinese. NTUST does not give scholarships to undergraduate applicants.[4]
  • Graduate: international applications for graduate programmes open in July and January each year. The admissions site also lists an INTENSE Program for international degree students.[8]

Graduate students pay the base tuition each semester until graduation and the basic credit fee for the first four semesters; the credit fee is NT$3,340 per credit, multiplied by the required graduation credits of the department and divided by four. From the 2026–27 fall semester NTUST no longer charges graduate students extra credit fees for undergraduate courses they take.[3] Different rules apply if other laws set another standard for foreign students.[3]

The financial statement required to confirm enrolment (for applicants without a scholarship) must show a cash balance of at least US$4,000.[8] For living costs, see our Taiwan guide.

How do you apply to Taiwan Tech?

Applications go through NTUST’s online application system. Paper applications are not accepted.[4]

  • Undergraduate: fall entry only. Upload all documents in the system and pay an application fee of US$30 (NT$1,000) per department.[4]
  • Graduate: the same US$30 per department. Applicants who receive no scholarship (including those with only a tuition waiver) must upload an English bank statement showing at least US$4,000, issued within the last six months, when they confirm enrolment. Applicants with a full or partial scholarship are exempt.[8]
  • Offers: a result is posted in the application system; if you do not reply by the stated date, the offer lapses. If you are admitted to more than one department, you can register at only one.[8]

We give no deadlines because they change every year; the admissions site lists the current timetable for each intake.

Which language level do you need?

For both undergraduate and graduate programmes NTUST asks for a language test equivalent to CEFR B1 or above for English-taught programmes and to TOCFL A2 for Chinese-taught programmes. Individual departments can set higher requirements in the application guideline.[6][9]

You are exempt from a certificate if you come from a country where English is the official or common language, if your previous degree was obtained in such a country, or if your previous degree was taught in English (for English-taught programmes). For Chinese-taught programmes, a previous degree taught in Chinese or a Chinese major also exempts you. Proof is required in each case.[6]

Because almost all undergraduate programmes are taught in Chinese, undergraduate applicants should plan on Chinese-language study.[4]
