About Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences
MUHAS traces its origins to the Dar es Salaam Medical School, established in 1963. In 1968 it became the Faculty of Medicine of the Dar es Salaam University College, then part of the University of East Africa, and after 1970 the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1991 the faculty became a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam, the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences, under Parliament Act No. 9 of 1991. MUHAS itself was established in 2007 through its Charter of Incorporation as an autonomous public university.[1] The University of Dar es Salaam confirms that this college was accredited as an independent university on 1 July 2007.[6]
Today the university has three campuses: Muhimbili in Upanga, Ilala District; Mloganzila in Ubungo District, covering about 3,800 acres; and Kigoma in Ujiji, covering 101 acres and still under development. The Bagamoyo Teaching Unit supports field and community-based training.[1] Its academic units are the College of Medicine, schools of Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Diagnostic Medicine, and the Institute of Traditional Medicine.[4]
How is MUHAS ranked?
We could not confirm a position for MUHAS in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (published 18 June 2026). The aggregator xuanxiao.org shows no overall QS entry for the university.[2] The same page lists a band of 1601–1800 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 and a position of 1,815 in the 2027 edition of U.S. News Best Global Universities.[2] These are different rankings and cannot be compared with QS. What can you study at MUHAS?
MUHAS offers programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health, laboratory sciences and other allied health sciences at undergraduate and postgraduate level.[7] The university website lists, among others, these bachelor’s programmes:[3]
- Doctor of Medicine (5 years) and Doctor of Dental Surgery (5 years)
- Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences, BSc Nursing and BSc Midwifery
- BSc Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, and Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography
- Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering, BSc Environmental Health Sciences, BSc Dental Laboratory Technology, BSc Prosthetics and Orthotics, and BSc Medical Psychology
The university introduced undergraduate programmes in Biomedical Engineering, Midwifery and Nurse Anaesthesia and eleven postgraduate programmes recently.[7] Postgraduate and diploma programmes are listed on the same site; we did not read their fee pages.
International students can also join for clinical electives. The elective programme is open to students from other universities in fields such as medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy; undergraduates must be in their clinical rotation years. Elective students pay programme fees unless they come under an exchange programme, need an entry visa, and are not offered on-campus accommodation.[8]

The undergraduate call for 2026/2027 does not list fees.[5] We did not read fee information for diploma or postgraduate programmes. For living costs, see our Tanzania guide.
