About Sokoine University of Agriculture

SUA traces its roots to Morogoro Agricultural College, which began diploma training in agriculture in 1965. In 1970 it became the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Dar es Salaam; forestry (1974) and veterinary science (1976) were added later. On 1 July 1984 the faculty became a full university under Parliamentary Act No. 6 of 1984, and the university received its charter in 2007.[8] The history page’s own introduction names Act No. 14 of 1984, which conflicts with its timeline and with the university’s postgraduate document; we use Act No. 6.[8][5]

The main campus is in Morogoro Municipality on the slopes of the Uluguru Mountains.[1] Other sites described in the university’s facts-and-figures report include the Solomon Mahlangu campus about 11 km north-west of Morogoro town, the Mizengo Pinda campus in Katavi region, which serves as a practical training centre, and the Olmotonyi forestry training campus in Arusha region.[2]

In 2024/25 SUA enrolled 17,897 students: 16,350 on bachelor’s degrees, 468 on non-degree programmes and 1,079 on postgraduate degrees. Of these, 89 were international students (24 undergraduate, 65 postgraduate). The report names Malawi, South Africa, Nigeria, China, Kenya, Benin, Rwanda, Ghana, Ethiopia and Germany among their countries.[2]

These amounts come from the programme entries of SUA’s undergraduate admission guidebook for 2026/2027. The guidebook states the fee beside each programme and does not repeat the year in the text.[4] It also does not give separate rates for students from East African Community countries; it only distinguishes Tanzanians from “international students”.[4]

Postgraduate fees

SUA’s postgraduate fee document is expressed differently. Tanzanians and students from the East African Community pay in TZS, SADC students and other international students in US dollars, and rates differ for social sciences, STEM and veterinary and biomedical programmes.[5] For example, tuition for a 12-month master’s by coursework and dissertation is TZS 1,115,000 (social sciences), TZS 1,265,000 (STEM) or TZS 1,535,000 (veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences) for Tanzanians and East African Community students.[5] The USD amounts for SADC and other international students are in the same document. That fee structure took effect in the 2022/2023 academic year and is attached to the 2026/2027 call, so confirm it with the university.[5] For living costs, see our Tanzania guide.

How do you apply to Sokoine University of Agriculture?

  • Undergraduate (certificate, diploma and degree): apply through the online portal linked from the university’s application page.[9] Most degrees ask for two principal passes (4 points) in specific subjects, or a diploma in a related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of at least 3.0, plus minimum O-level grades.[4] The guidebook also accepts equivalent foreign qualifications as established by the national examinations bodies NECTA or VETA.[4]
  • Postgraduate: apply through the separate postgraduate online system. The application fee is TZS 50,000, or US$ 20 for international students, who pay by bank transfer to the university’s US dollar account as described in the call.[5]
  • International applicants: Tanzania’s regulator reminded the public in July 2026 that international applicants apply directly to their chosen universities.[10] SUA’s application page gives no separate instructions for them and points to its international students page.[9]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year. Check the current guidebook or call.

Which language level do you need?

The undergraduate guidebook and the international students page do not state the language of instruction or name a language test. Several programmes list a pass in English at O-level among their entry requirements, for example the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine.[4] Confirm the teaching language and any test with the programme before you apply.
