About LASALLE College of the Arts

Brother Joseph McNally established the St Patrick’s Arts Centre in 1984, which offered diploma education; LASALLE says he founded LASALLE College of the Arts on the belief that the arts could shape lives and societies.[1] The college moved to its city campus at 1 McNally Street in 2007 and acquired the Winstedt Campus studio and workshop spaces in 2013.[1]

LASALLE is registered with the Commissioner of Charities as an Institution of a Public Character (IPC).[5] It is a founding member of the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS), which was formed in 2021 in an alliance with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. LASALLE describes UAS as “Singapore’s first publicly-funded private university of the arts”.[1] Wikipedia says the two member institutions operate as distinct entities.[7]

An arts college, not a general university: LASALLE teaches art, design, music, performing arts and related subjects.[5] Wikipedia lists eight schools, among them the McNally School of Fine Arts, the School of Contemporary Music and the Puttnam School of Film & Animation.[6] Its degrees are awarded through UAS and, earlier, through foreign partners (see below).

Who awards LASALLE’s degrees?

It depends on when you started. Students who started a BA (Hons) from August 2024 graduate with a degree conferred by the University of the Arts Singapore. Students who started before August 2024 receive a Goldsmiths, University of London degree.[3] The diploma is conferred by LASALLE College of the Arts, not by UAS.[4]

LASALLE’s history page lists earlier partners: degrees were conferred or validated by RMIT from 1993, The Open University (UK) from 2004 and Goldsmiths, University of London from 2012; the first cohort to graduate with a UAS degree entered in 2024.[1]
