About Monash University

Monash University was established by an Act of the Victorian Parliament in 1958 and welcomed its first students at the Clayton campus in 1961. It is named after Sir John Monash, a soldier-engineer and administrator.[1] In 1990 a merger with Chisholm Institute brought in the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses, and a partnership with the Victorian College of Pharmacy brought in Parkville.[1]

Today Monash has four campuses in Victoria (Caulfield, Clayton, Peninsula and Parkville) and international locations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Italy, India and China.[6] The university describes itself as the largest in Australia.[6] Its student load of 78,230 in 2024 was split across ten faculties; Business and Economics and Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences were the largest by 2023 enrolments.[2]

Student numbers: the official figure is “student load”, a full-time-equivalent measure, so it is lower than a head count of people enrolled. Other sources quote higher totals.
