What can you study at the University of Melbourne?

The undergraduate courses named in the university’s English-language requirements include the Bachelor of Agriculture, Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design, Fine Arts, Music and Science, plus the Bachelor of Oral Health.[3] Undergraduate fees are calculated from the subjects you choose rather than from the course name, and most degrees mix subjects from more than one discipline band.[6][2]

Graduate coursework and research courses are listed in the 2027 fee tables by faculty or school: Architecture, Building and Planning; Arts; Business and Economics; Education; Engineering and IT; Fine Arts and Music; Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Melbourne Law School; Melbourne Professional Education; Science; and the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.[2]

Doctoral research and scholarships

The majority of international graduate researchers receive a full tuition fee-remission scholarship, valid for up to four years for a doctorate and up to two years for a Master of Research. All international applicants are considered automatically for Graduate Research Stipend and Fee Offset Scholarships.[7] The PhD fees in the table apply only to a fee-paying place.

Deposit and other costs

To accept an offer you pay a minimum deposit of A$17,000, credited as the first instalment of your tuition fees.[6][8] Student visa holders also need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which can be paid at the same time.[6] The graduate coursework page states that international students do not pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee because the university covers it.[8] Living costs come on top; see the Study in Australia guide.

How do you apply to the University of Melbourne?

  • Undergraduate: international applications are made through the university’s online application portal for the start-of-year (Semester 1) and mid-year (Semester 2) intakes. The page also describes a separate application route through VTAC for the main start-year intake. Closing dates change every year, so check the current page.[9]
  • Graduate coursework: applications go directly through the university’s online application system. Applicants whose most recent study was in certain countries must apply through an authorised education agent for document verification. Closing dates and intakes are listed on each course page.[10]
  • Graduate research: the university runs a separate application process, with automatic scholarship consideration.[7]

After an offer you accept it, pay the deposit and receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which you need for the student visa application.[9] Visa applications are lodged with the Australian Department of Home Affairs, which lists the Student visa (subclass 500) with a stay of up to six years in line with your enrolment.[11] A student visa only allows full-time study in a CRICOS-registered course.[9] We give no deadlines here because they change every year.

Which English level do you need?

All graduate and undergraduate courses are taught and assessed in English.[12] For undergraduate entry the minimum depends on the course:[3]
