About the University of Technology Sydney

UTS was formally established on 26 January 1988 under the University of Technology, Sydney Act 1987, which gave university status to the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT).[1] The institute itself dates from 1964, and the family tree goes back to the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts (1833) and Sydney Technical College (1878).[1]

The main City Campus is on the southern edge of Sydney’s central business district, around Broadway and Ultimo.[1] UTS lists the City Campus address as 15 Broadway, Ultimo. Of its 2025 enrolments, 53,235 were in Australia and 1,168 overseas.[2] Its pages list seven faculties and schools, from the UTS Business School to the Transdisciplinary School.[2]

UTS and UTS College: UTS College is a separate pathway provider that UTS’s admission pages recognise (its English course AE5 counts as proof of English, for example).[5] Its diploma fees are not UTS degree fees; see the pathway note in the section on applying.

How do you apply to the University of Technology Sydney?

International applicants can apply directly through the UTS Application Portal (or a PDF form), through an approved recruitment agent, or in person to a UTS representative at an international event.[6] The steps are: check academic and English requirements, provide the documents, pay the application fee, submit and accept the offer.[6]

  • Documents: academic transcripts and English test scores must be certified copies; documents in other languages need an official English translation.[6]
  • Processing: UTS says complete applications normally take about one to two weeks, and applying does not guarantee admission.[6]
  • Intakes: autumn (February/March), spring (July) and summer (November).[6]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year. Check the course page for your intake. The UTS page does not mention the visa or the confirmation of enrolment and only links to a visa section, so see the Study in Australia guide for the visa basics.[6]
