About Queensland University of Technology

QUT’s earliest antecedent is the Brisbane School of Arts of 1849. The Queensland Institute of Technology was formed in 1965, received university status under the Queensland University of Technology Act in 1988 and began operating as a university in January 1989. The Brisbane College of Advanced Education joined in 1990.[1] Its motto is “the university for the real world”.[1]

The Gardens Point campus lies in the Brisbane city centre by the river and houses Business, Law, Science and Engineering. Kelvin Grove houses Creative Industries, Education and Health, as well as QUT International College.[1] A campus at Caboolture was transferred to the University of the Sunshine Coast in January 2018.[1]

How is QUT ranked?

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, QUT is 240th in the world and 16th in Australia, according to Time Out’s list of the Australian results.[2] PickMyUni’s table shows the same positions and a fall of 14 places from 226th in the 2026 edition.[3] A ranking table from the Chinese portal xuanxiao.org lists QUT at 240 as well.[7]

Wikipedia lists further results for earlier editions: ARWU 301–400 (2025) and Times Higher Education 201–250 (2026).[1] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings. For the national table see the Australia ranking.

What can you study at QUT?

QUT teaches business, law, science, engineering, creative industries, education and health across its two main campuses.[1] The 2027 international guide lists, for example, the Bachelor of Business (3 years; February, July and November intakes) and the Bachelor of Information Technology (3 years; February and July intakes), both at Gardens Point.[4] The same portal handles bridging, foundation and diploma programmes for students who do not yet meet the entry level.[5]

How much does QUT cost for international students in 2027?

CourseFee per year, 2027 (AUD)Length
Bachelor of Business$46,8003 years
Bachelor of Information Technology$46,7003 years

The figures come from QUT’s 2027 international quick guide (“updated fees edition”).[4] The Bachelor of Business course page confirms the A$46,800 as a 2027 amount for a full-time year of 96 credit points.[6] QUT says that the amount you pay depends on the units you choose, the number of units you enrol in and the year of study, and that fees rise each year at the start of the year.[4]

Where QUT’s guide lists engineering degrees, we could not tell from the extract which figure belongs to which course, so we give no engineering fee. Check the course page of your degree. Further costs (health cover, living) are covered in the Study in Australia guide.

How we read these pages: qut.edu.au blocks automated access, so we read the fee and English figures from the search-engine extracts of the official guide and course page. Confirm the amount on the course page before you decide.

How do you apply to QUT?

QUT’s guidance for agents says that applications for undergraduate courses, postgraduate coursework and bridging, foundation and diploma programmes go through the QUT Application Portal.[5] We found no statement that undergraduate applicants must use an agent; research degrees are the exception, where an applicant told to apply via a QUT representative must do so.[5]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year and differ by course. Check the intake dates on the course page.

Which English level do you need?

QUT’s admission policy leaves the level to each course: it sets no general IELTS band score, and each course states its own minimum.[8] In the 2027 guide, the Bachelor of Business and the Bachelor of Information Technology both show IELTS 6.5 (with 6 in the bracket).[4] An IELTS Academic result must be no more than two years old at the course start date.[8]

The policy also recognises other routes: Australian secondary schooling, a year of full-time diploma-level study or higher in Australia, a recognised English bridging programme, or equivalent English-medium study abroad that QUT recognises.[8] Visa English rules are separate; check them with the Department of Home Affairs.
