About IIT Guwahati
The institute came out of the 1985 Assam Accord, which included a commitment to set up an IIT in Assam. It was established in 1994 by an amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act and is the sixth IIT.[1] Teaching started in 1995.[7]
The campus covers about 700 acres on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river, around 20 kilometres from central Guwahati, and is fully residential.[1] The institute has eleven departments and five interdisciplinary academic centres.[7]
How is IIT Guwahati ranked?
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, IIT Guwahati is 349th in the world and ninth among Indian institutions.[2] A list of the Indian institutions marks the position as tied (=349).[8] IIT Delhi is the highest-ranked Indian institution at 118th, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Madras.[2]
In India’s own National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 the institute reports 10th place overall and 8th in engineering.[7] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.

|---|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.Des | Rs 300,000 | Rs 150,000 |

These are the tuition rates on the institute’s fee page for foreign nationals; the page has no date, but the institute’s July 2026 notification for international applicants links to it.[3] SAARC is the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. Semester exchange students not covered by an agreement pay Rs 100,000 (undergraduate) or Rs 30,000 (postgraduate and doctoral) per semester.[3]
Other charges
Tuition is only part of the bill. The same page lists one-time non-refundable fees of Rs 10,800 (plus a Rs 10,000 thesis fee for doctoral students), refundable deposits of Rs 12,000, and further per-semester charges of Rs 45,852 for registration, medical insurance, hostel and mess advance and similar items; the hostel items apply only to students living in hostels.[3] The page states that all components except tuition are the same for all students of a programme.[3]
Older fee sheet
An older fee sheet for foreign master’s and PhD students joining in July 2021 quoted annual tuition in US dollars ($2,000 for SAARC and $4,000 for non-SAARC countries).[10] The current page uses rupees and different amounts, so use the current page.
Scholarships
The institute accepts applications from foreign nationals nominated by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for master’s and PhD programmes.[6] For living costs and visas, see our India guide.
How do you apply to IIT Guwahati as a foreign national?
The route depends on the level.
- B.Tech and B.Des: foreign nationals register directly for JEE (Advanced) and do not have to write JEE (Main). Seats for them are supernumerary and limited to 10% of the seats in each programme at an IIT. A seat is allotted if the candidate’s common rank is at least as good as the closing rank for the open category in that programme. Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is required; the age limit and the number of attempts are set in the JEE (Advanced) brochure.[4]
- Master’s and PhD: apply on the institute’s portal for international applicants, which opens for each session. For foreign nationals the qualifying degree should come from a foreign institution; a degree from India is accepted if the applicant has qualified a national exam such as GATE, CAT, CEED or NET-JRF (the score itself plays no role). MSc programmes accept only foreign nationals with a foreign degree. Selection is by past results and an online interview.[5] The portal for the July 2026 session has closed; no later session was announced on the pages we read.[11]
- Other routes: an older institute page lists self-financed, ICCR, sponsored and partner-institution (MoU) candidates for master’s and PhD, says that no application fee is charged to foreign applicants, and asks applicants from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq and Sudan to route applications through the Indian embassy or high commission.[6] That page describes a postal procedure that the 2026 notification has replaced, so follow the current portal.
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a separate undergraduate scheme; its 2026 brochure covers NITs, IIEST, IIITs, SPAs and other government-funded technical institutes, not IITs.[12] We give no deadlines because they change every year. Students need a student or research visa.[6]
Which language level do you need?
English is the only language of teaching at the institute.[6] The pages we read publish no minimum IELTS or TOEFL score. An older institute page lists “documentary proof to illustrate fluency in English” among the documents foreign master’s and PhD applicants send.[6] The 2026 notification does not mention a language test, so ask the department you are applying to which proof it accepts before you book a test.[5]
