About IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay was established in 1958 and is an autonomous institute and deemed university. In 1961 an Act of Parliament granted it the status of an institution of national importance.[1] The institute describes its campus in Powai, Mumbai, as covering 200 hectares.[1] Wikipedia gives 545 acres (221 hectares), between Powai Lake and Vihar Lake.[2] The two figures are close once the units are converted, but we do not know which boundary each one uses.

Wikipedia lists 17 departments, from Aerospace Engineering to Physics, and three schools: the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, the IDC School of Design and the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management. It also reports 35 academic centres and says the institute was designated an Institution of Eminence on 11 October 2018.[2]

Not the same as IIT (BHU) Varanasi or other IITs: there are many Indian Institutes of Technology, each a separate institution with its own admissions and fees. This page covers IIT Bombay in Mumbai only.

What can you study at IIT Bombay?

Undergraduate programmes named in the fee circular are the four-year B.Tech, B.S. and B.Des. and the five-year dual degrees (B.Tech. + M.Tech.).[4] For international applicants at master’s and doctoral level, the institute lists:[7]

  • Master’s: M.Tech., M.B.A., M.Des., M.S. by Research, Master in Public Policy, Master in Development Practice, Master of Arts by Research and M.Des. by Research.
  • Dual degree: MA + Ph.D. in Philosophy.
  • Doctoral: Ph.D. in departments, centres and schools.

According to Wikipedia, undergraduate admission is through JEE Advanced and graduate admission through JAM and GATE.[2] The 17 departments include Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Economics.[2]

These figures come from the institute’s fee circular dated 29 April 2026 for the Autumn Semester 2026–27 and the new-entrant fee structure.[4] SAARC in this circular means Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives; all other countries count as non-SAARC.[4] The circular covers the Autumn semester only. A year has two semesters, so a foreign-national B.Tech student pays INR 600,000 in tuition over a year if the Spring semester is charged at the same rate; this is our arithmetic, not a figure from the circular.

One-time fees and deposits

New foreign-national undergraduates pay one-time fees of INR 16,000 and refundable deposits of INR 10,000 on top of the semester fees; the first-semester grand total in the circular is INR 334,150.[4] International M.Tech, M.B.A. and Ph.D. entrants pay INR 42,550 in one-time fees and a refundable security deposit of INR 12,000; for a non-SAARC M.Tech student the first-semester total is INR 232,700.[4]

Who pays the Indian rate?

Foreign nationals with a valid PIO/OCI card issued before 4 March 2021 who are allotted seats in the OPEN category pay the fees of Indian nationals. Foreign nationals without such a card, allotted foreign-national supernumerary seats, pay the foreign-national fees.[4] The institute can revise the fee structure in later semesters.[4]

Proving you can pay

Self-financing applicants must show a bank balance, which the international admissions page sets at US$10,000 for a two-year postgraduate programme and US$20,000 for a Ph.D. That page carries no date.[7]

For living costs in Mumbai, see our India guide. The circular does not list hostel fees; it refers questions about hostel fees and room allotment to the institute’s Hostel Coordination Unit.[4]

How do you apply to IIT Bombay as an international student?

The route depends on the level of study.

  • Undergraduate: the institute’s page on foreign-student admission to the IITs lists entrance-examination facilitation and a common admission portal for undergraduates.[10] The 2026–27 fee circular refers to foreign-national supernumerary seats for new entrants.[4] Wikipedia reports that undergraduate admission is through JEE Advanced.[2] We could not confirm other routes, such as DASA, from the pages we read.
  • Postgraduate: the IITs’ page says postgraduate admissions are done on the basis of GATE and mentions a common postgraduate portal that was “to be released soon”.[10] International degree students apply online through one of three portals: the IIT Bombay international admissions portal, the Study in India portal or the ICCR A2A scholarships portal.[7]
  • Documents: an application form, grade transcripts, a statement of purpose, two or three recommendation letters (at least one from a faculty member), a CV and a passport copy.[7]

The institute processes applications only when all documents arrive within the deadline.[7] We give no deadlines here because they change every year; check the programme page of the Academic Office before you start.

Which English level do you need?

International applicants must provide one proof of English proficiency. A note on the mark sheets or a letter from the home university stating that the medium of instruction was English can serve as proof; other accepted proofs include a certificate of tertiary-level proficiency from a university, an English instructor or a national agency, or a pass in a recognised test.[7] The page does not name the accepted tests or minimum scores, so ask the admissions office before you book one.
