About IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi describes itself as established in 1961 as the College of Engineering, later declared an Institution of Eminence; it is one of the 23 IITs.[1] Wikipedia dates the formal inauguration to 17 August 1961 and says the 1963 amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act made it an institute of national importance with full university status.[3]

The main campus is at Hauz Khas in South Delhi. Wikipedia also lists satellite campuses in Sonipat and Jhajjar in Haryana and an international campus in Abu Dhabi, for which a memorandum of understanding was signed in July 2023.[3] Wikipedia names several externally funded schools, including the Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management, the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence, the Kusuma School of Biological Sciences and the School of Public Policy.[3]

Not the same as the Abu Dhabi campus: this page covers the main campus in New Delhi, not the international campus in the UAE.

How is IIT Delhi ranked?

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, IIT Delhi is 118th in the world, up five places from 123rd. It is the highest-ranked Indian institution, ahead of IIT Bombay (134th) and IIT Madras (170th).[2][6]

In India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of September 2025, IIT Delhi is 4th overall and, in the engineering category, 2nd after IIT Madras.[7][8] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.

What can you study at IIT Delhi?

The 2026–27 undergraduate fee circular covers the B.Tech., dual degrees, B.S. in Chemistry and B.Tech. in Design.[4] At postgraduate level the institute’s page names these entry requirements:[5]

  • M.Tech. and MS(R): a bachelor’s degree of at least four years in engineering or technology, or a master’s degree in science or mathematics.
  • M.Sc.: a Bachelor of Science of at least three years in the relevant discipline.
  • MBA: admission on the CAT score, followed by a group discussion and personal interview.
  • Ph.D.: a master’s or equivalent degree, often combined with a written test and interview.

For Indian applicants, Wikipedia lists JEE Advanced for the B.Tech., GATE for most M.Tech. programmes, CEED for the M.Des., JAM for the M.Sc. and CAT for the MBA.[3]

How much does IIT Delhi cost for international students in 2026/27?

Undergraduate, other countries (2026/27)USD 2,000about INR 31,000
Undergraduate, same tuition (2024/25)USD 1,000 / USD 2,000INR 22,400
Postgraduate and doctoralSame tuition for Indian and non-Indian students; amounts not on the page we read

The 2026–27 circular for new undergraduate entrants lists tuition of USD 1,000 for SAARC countries and USD 2,000 for non-SAARC countries. The “other charges” of INR 31,000 are the sum of INR 8,150 one-time payments, INR 6,250 other charges, INR 8,000 refundable deposits and INR 8,600 institute residence fee or hostel seat rent.[4] The circular is a scanned document and does not state in the text we could read whether the dollar tuition covers a semester or a year, so confirm that with the Academic Section. For the 2024–25 entry the same circular listed the same dollar tuition and INR 22,400 in other charges.[9]

Postgraduate and doctoral fees

The institute’s postgraduate page says: “All graduate students (Indian and non-Indian) pay the same tuition fees.”[5] We could not read a current fee sheet for M.Tech., M.Sc. or Ph.D. students, so we give no amounts. Look at the circulars page of the Academic Section for the fee circular of your entry year.

Indian-national undergraduates pay a graded tuition (INR 100,000 at the full rate, with reductions by family income) in the same circular; foreign nationals are charged the dollar amounts above.[4] For living costs in Delhi, see our India guide.

How do you apply to IIT Delhi as an international student?

The route depends on the level of study.

  • Undergraduate: Wikipedia reports that the B.Tech. is admitted through JEE Advanced.[3] The 2026–27 fee circular for new entrants has a separate fee table for foreign nationals.[4] We could not read the institute’s eligibility page for foreign nationals, so we cannot confirm routes such as DASA, ICCR or Study in India for undergraduates.
  • Postgraduate: the institute states that entrance exams are required for Indian nationals (and for those who obtained their qualifying degree in India), but that “this requirement is waived for foreign nationals”.[5]
  • Ph.D.: the international office says online Ph.D. applications were closed when we read the page, while offline applications are accepted throughout the year.[10]
  • Visa: all foreign students must register on the Study in India portal before applying for a student visa.[10]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year; check the international office and the programme page before you start.

Which language level do you need?

The pages we could read do not state an English-language test or score for foreign applicants. The international admissions pages that would carry this requirement could not be opened when we checked, so we make no claim about accepted tests or minimum scores. Ask the Academic Section or the international office before you book a test.
