About the University of Hyderabad
The University of Hyderabad was established as a Central University by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 39 of 1974) on 2 October 1974.[1] It started in 1974 at the Golden Threshold, a house in the middle of the city that the family of the poet Sarojini Naidu gave to the university, and later moved to its large campus in Gachibowli.[6]
The prospectus gives the campus size as about 2,000 acres, while the university’s history page says 2,500 acres; we cannot tell which figure is current.[3][6] The government named the university an Institution of Eminence in September 2019, a status that brings extra funding and autonomy.[3]
How is the University of Hyderabad ranked?
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, the University of Hyderabad is in the 851–900 band. Two news reports of 18 and 19 June 2026 give this band. Deccan Chronicle says the university “retained its global position”, while Careers360 headlines the result as a drop; the band itself is the same in both.[2][7] A list of Indian entries in the QS 2027 top 1,000 also shows 851–900.[8]
The 2026-27 prospectus still quotes a QS band of 801–850 without naming the edition, so it appears to be older than the 2027 report.[3] Nationally, the prospectus puts the university 18th among Indian universities and 26th overall in the NIRF 2025, the Indian government’s national ranking.[3] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. What can you study at the University of Hyderabad?
The university has 12 schools: Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Management Studies, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer and Information Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Engineering Sciences and Technology, Medical Sciences, and Arts and Communication.[6] The foreign-student fee table covers integrated master’s degrees, M.Sc., M.A., M.B.A., M.Tech., M.C.A., B.Optometry, four-year B.S. programmes and Ph.D. programmes.[3]
The 2026-27 admissions portal for foreign nationals names Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Sc. (Biotechnology), M.C.A., M.B.A., B.Optometry and Integrated M.Tech. programmes.[9] The prospectus notes that foreign nationals must meet the same qualifying degree and marks as Indian students, and the department decides if an equivalent programme from the home university is acceptable.[3]

How do you apply to the University of Hyderabad as a foreign student?
For admission, a “foreign national” is anyone with a foreign passport, including holders of OCI cards who use a foreign passport. NRIs with an Indian passport count as Indian nationals.[5]
- Register on the Study in India portal: the prospectus says all international students except OCI cardholders must apply through the SII portal to get an SII number, which they need for the visa.[3]
- Apply to the university: send the application form with certified transcripts, two recommendation letters, proof of financial support and a medical certificate to the Office for International Affairs. Students sponsored by ICCR or other agencies apply through those agencies.[5][3]
- Assessment: the admissions committee of the school or department decides. International Ph.D. applicants are exempt from the entrance test and may be asked for an online interview, while foreign nationals who already live in India and hold an Indian degree must take part of the entrance process, such as an interview.[3][5] Applicants for the M.Tech. in Computer Science, AI and IT are exempt from GATE; the Bioinformatics and Biotechnology programmes ask for GRE scores.[5]
- Visa: no foreign national is admitted without a student visa, and Ph.D. students must have a Research Visa before they can complete admission. Health insurance for the whole stay is required.[5]
We give no deadlines here because they change every year, and the web page and the prospectus even state different dates. Check the current admissions notice before you apply.[5][3]
Which English level do you need?
The prospectus requires proof of English proficiency from every candidate who is not a graduate of a university in an English-speaking country. Their college education must also have been taught in English. The accepted scores are IELTS Academic 6.5, or TOEFL with 560 on the paper-based test, 220 on the computer-based test or 80 on the internet-based test. Scores are valid for two years from the test date.[3] The international admissions web page asks every foreign national for one of these two scores.[5]
The prospectus adds that admission committees may insist on a TOEFL or IELTS score for master’s and Ph.D. admissions.[3]
