About IIT Indore

IIT Indore was founded in 2009 as one of eight new Indian Institutes of Technology. In its first year, 2009 to 2010, it worked from a temporary campus at the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore, with IIT Bombay as mentor.[1] The institute is now based on a campus of about 500 acres at Simrol on Khandwa Road.[1]

Wikipedia lists 12 departments: Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering; Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science; and Physics.[1] Its own website reports more than 11,000 publications, 900 research and development projects and more than 300 patents filed.[5]

Not the same as IIT (BHU) Varanasi: IIT Indore is in Madhya Pradesh. IIT (BHU) Varanasi is a different Indian Institute of Technology in Uttar Pradesh, and the Banaras Hindu University is a separate university again.

How is IIT Indore ranked?

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, IIT Indore is 546th in the world and 14th among Indian institutions in the ranking tables of Careers360.[2] A second Indian news site lists the same world position.[6]

In the national NIRF ranking (a ranking run by India’s Ministry of Education), Wikipedia reports 27th overall and 12th among engineering institutions for 2025; for 2024 it reports 33rd overall and 16th in engineering.[1] Publishers use different methods and years, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.

What can you study at IIT Indore?

The undergraduate programmes listed on the institute’s admissions page are the 4-year B.Tech, B.Des and B.S.[7] At postgraduate level it lists M.Tech (2 or 3 years, with about 20 specialisations), M.S. (Research), M.Sc and M.A. (2 years each), plus a dual-degree option.[8] The PhD page counts 9 engineering departments, 3 science departments, 1 humanities department and 5 centres or schools, so the total differs slightly from the department list above.[9]

Postgraduate admission categories include teaching assistantships for full-time students, defence-forces candidates, candidates sponsored by industry or research organisations, and institute staff studying part-time.[8]

How much does IIT Indore cost for international students?

The Autumn 2026 fee notice (circular of 11 July 2026, academic year 2026–27) sets separate rates for Indian and international students.[3] Amounts below are per semester. Convert at the current exchange rate before you budget.

Mess advance and hostel charges add ₹33,000.[3] Fees are due in full at registration; the institute does not accept instalments.[3] For rent and living costs, see our India guide.

How do you apply to IIT Indore?

The route depends on the level and on your nationality.

  • B.Tech, first year: IIT Indore’s undergraduate page lists the programmes but does not describe the entrance route.[7] Wikipedia gives JEE (Advanced) as the route for B.Tech.[1] Seats at the IITs are allocated through JoSAA, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, whose 2026–27 list covers 23 IITs, IISc Bengaluru, 31 NITs and other institutes.[10]
  • Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates, B.Tech: in the 2026 cycle they could register directly for JEE (Advanced) without taking JEE Main, in a separate registration window. Their seats are supernumerary, which means over and above the normal intake, and capped at 10% of the seats in each course.[11] DASA, the Government of India scheme for foreign nationals and overseas Indians, describes itself as covering institutes “other than IITs”, so it is not the route to IIT Indore.[12]
  • Master’s and PhD, international: the institute’s international page lists three categories: self-financed, sponsored by industry or an NGO, and government-sponsored (ICCR scholarship, Study in India, ASEAN scholarship and foreign-government sponsorships). You apply through an international application portal and take part in an interview in person or by video.[4]
  • Master’s, Indian applicants: entrance routes named are GATE, JAM and COAP, followed by shortlisting on exam score and academic record and an interview.[8]
  • PhD: qualifying exams named are GATE, JEST and CSIR-NET; the process includes a statement of purpose, two reference letters and a written test or interview. International applicants pay the application fee by RTGS bank transfer.[9]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year and differ by programme. The institute describes two intakes, Autumn (July to December) and Spring (January to May).[4] Questions from international applicants go to the International Relations office.[4]

Which English level do you need?

International applicants to the full-time PG and PhD programmes need a valid TOEFL or IELTS result, or an equivalent, together with a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and an interview.[4] The institute’s pages do not publish minimum scores, so ask the International Relations office or your department before you book a test.[4] The PhD page does not mention an English requirement of its own.[9]
