About IIT Hyderabad

The Ministry of Education set up IIT Hyderabad with technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan. It was established under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. Teaching began on 18 August 2008 on a temporary campus at the Ordnance Factory Medak, and the institute moved to its 576-acre permanent campus at Kandi in Sangareddy in July 2015.[1]

The campus is in Sangareddy district, on NH-65, about 15 km from the Outer Ring Road around Hyderabad.[1] QS lists the institute’s location as Sangareddy.[8] The institute says that more than 6,140 students study there and that it introduced India’s first B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence.[2]

Not the same as IIIT Hyderabad: the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad is a separate institution, as is the University of Hyderabad.[1]

How is IIT Hyderabad ranked?

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026, IIT Hyderabad is 588th in the world, up 76 places on the year before.[9] A list of the Indian institutions puts it 17th in India.[8] The institute’s own page reports the same position and adds, in its own words, that this places it among the top 10% of global institutions in citations per faculty.[2]

In India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 the institute reports 7th place among engineering institutes, 6th in innovation, 15th in research and 12th overall.[2] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.

How do you apply to IIT Hyderabad as a foreign national?

  • B.Tech and B.Des: foreign nationals register directly for JEE (Advanced) and do not need JEE (Main). Their seats are supernumerary, up to 10% of the seats in each programme at an IIT, and a seat is allotted if the candidate’s common rank is at least as good as the closing rank for the open category in that programme.[4]
  • M.Tech and M.Des: the institute says foreign-national admissions are done through ICCR (the Indian Council for Cultural Relations) and Study in India.[7] An undated guideline document describes self-financing and visiting-student categories and an interview by phone or video. It lists three ways to qualify: a degree from India (other than an IIT) or abroad plus a valid GATE score; an IIT degree with a CGPA of 8.0 or higher; or a degree from a university abroad plus GRE. Foreign-national seats are supernumerary, capped at 10% per programme.[6] The document looks old, so check the current application form.
  • PhD: every department offers a PhD, and the institute runs a central online portal for regular PhD admissions.[10] The pages we read do not describe a separate route for foreign nationals.

DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a separate undergraduate scheme whose 2026 brochure covers NITs, IIEST, IIITs, SPAs and other government-funded technical institutes, not IITs.[11] We give no deadlines because they change every year; check the programme page before you start.

Which language level do you need?

The medium of instruction at IIT Hyderabad is English.[6] The pages we read publish no minimum IELTS or TOEFL score for foreign applicants, so ask the department which proof of English it accepts before you book a test.
