About Blekinge Institute of Technology

BTH calls itself a state university with three main tasks: education, research, and engaging with the surrounding society. Its figures for staff, students and research come from the annual report 2025: about 7,300 students, about 500 employees, 41 professors and about 106 doctoral students. Two thirds of its activity is education at first and second cycle and one third is research and doctoral education.[1]

Wikipedia dates the founding to 1989, with the Gräsvik campus in Karlskrona, and says the institute was granted university status in engineering in 1999.[6] BTH’s own pages describe the campus in Karlskrona, an archipelago city that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 1998.[2] Wikipedia also lists a Karlshamn campus opened in 2000; the BTH pages we read mention only Karlskrona.[6]

How is Blekinge Institute of Technology ranked?

We could not confirm a position for BTH in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026. QS blocks automated access to its own site, and none of the sources we read gave a QS position for the institute.

BTH makes claims about research in software engineering. Its “Choose BTH” page says BTH is “ranked second globally” in software engineering research; the page we read does not name the ranking.[2] Wikipedia says BTH ranked 6th in the world in Systems and Software Engineering research, also without a dated edition in the text we read.[6] We treat both as unverified. Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.

What can you study at Blekinge Institute of Technology?

BTH offers 21 undergraduate and 11 master’s programmes in nine fields of study. The subject areas include computer science, electrical engineering, industrial economics and management, product development, software development, spatial planning, and strategic sustainable development.[2]

The master’s programmes named on BTH’s selection page for autumn 2026 include Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI and Machine Learning, Machine Learning Sensors and Systems, Innovation Management, Business Analytics, an MBA, Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability, and Sustainable Urban Planning and Design.[9] Each programme page lists its tuition fee, length and entry requirements.[2]

How much does Blekinge Institute of Technology cost?

Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland pay no tuition fees. Citizens of other countries pay both application and tuition fees; whether you must pay is checked at universityadmissions.se.[3][10] BTH’s fee pages state no amounts. They say the amount depends on the specific course or programme and refer to the programme page and to University Admissions.[3][11] The pages we read also name no academic year, so we give none.

  • Payment: for one- and two-year programmes you pay an entire semester in advance; for single courses you pay the whole course up front.[3]
  • Included: access to study administration, counselling, student health services, library facilities and computer labs.[3]
  • Application fee: SEK 900, paid once and not refundable; BTH offers no fee exemptions.[4][12]

Scholarships

The BTH scholarship is open to citizens of non-EU/EEA countries who must pay tuition and apply to a campus-based BTH programme; applicants to distance education are not eligible. It covers only part of the tuition fee and no living expenses. You apply through University Admissions with BTH as your first choice and receive a link to the scholarship form by email. Selection is mainly on academic merit; work experience and financial situation are not considered.[5] Students already at BTH can apply later in their studies if they still owe tuition for at least two semesters.[5]

The page also describes the Swedish Institute (SI) Scholarship for Pioneering Women in STEM for autumn 2026: full tuition paid by SI, a monthly stipend of SEK 12,000 and a one-time travel grant of SEK 15,000, for women from ten named countries admitted to designated master’s programmes in Computer Science or Software Engineering.[5] For living costs see our Study in Sweden guide.

How do you apply to Blekinge Institute of Technology?

You apply through University Admissions (universityadmissions.se), Sweden’s national portal, where you can choose up to four programme options.[12]

  • Bachelor’s: you must have completed upper secondary education.[12]
  • Master’s: you need a completed bachelor’s degree, or be in your final year with the degree finished before the programme starts.[12]

Programme-specific requirements are on each programme page, and BTH publishes a separate page listing its document requirements.[12] For master’s places BTH ranks applicants by programme-specific methods: for several programmes by documented higher education credits, for the MBA by education and work experience, for Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability by motivation letter and CV, and for Sustainable Urban Planning and Design by an overall review of prior education. GPA is not a selection criterion, and ties are broken by random selection.[9]

We give no deadlines here because they change every year. Check the application timetable on BTH’s pages before you start.

Which English level do you need?

The BTH pages we read do not state an English requirement; they refer to the entry requirements on each programme page.[12] The national rules apply: bachelor’s applicants need English 6 (English Level 2), and most master’s programmes require English 6, a few English 5 or English 7.[8]

  • IELTS Academic: overall 6.5, no section below 5.5.
  • TOEFL iBT: for results from 21 January 2026, a total of 4.5 on the 1 to 6 scale and no section below 4; for earlier results, a written score of 20 and a total of 90.
  • Pearson PTE Academic: overall 62, writing 61.
  • Cambridge: C1 Advanced with at least 180.[8]

Other routes exist, such as 60 ECTS credits taught in English in an accepted country. A school certificate alone does not count.[8]
