About Lund University

Lund University was founded in 1666 on the site of an older medieval studium generale next to Lund Cathedral. The Swedish Crown set it up after Sweden gained Scania from Denmark in 1658, partly to make the region Swedish; its first name was Academia Carolina.[7]

Application fee

Non-EU/EEA applicants pay SEK 900 (about EUR 80) to University Admissions in Sweden, once per semester however many programmes they apply for. Applicants already registered at a Swedish university may be exempt.[6]

Scholarships

The Lund University Global Scholarship is a merit-based grant for new international master’s students (and a few bachelor’s programmes) who must pay tuition. Grants may cover part or all of the fee; living costs are not included. The Lund programme must be your first choice, and financial need is not considered.[10] For living costs in Sweden, see our Sweden guide and the Study in Sweden guide.

How do you apply to Lund University?

You apply through universityadmissions.se, the central portal for Swedish universities. The programme pages direct applicants there and point out that application rounds vary by citizenship.[3] Non-EU/EEA applicants pay the SEK 900 application fee to University Admissions; EU/EEA and Swiss citizens pay nothing but upload a scanned passport or ID card before the document deadline.[6]

If you want the Global Scholarship, you must first submit a complete application, with the Lund programme as your first choice.[10] We give no deadlines because they change every year; check the programme page and the portal.

Which English level do you need?

The master’s programmes we read ask for English course 6 / English level 2.[3][4] University Admissions accepts, among other proofs, IELTS Academic with an overall 6.5 and no section below 5.5; TOEFL iBT with a total of 4.5 on the 1–6 scale and no section below 4 for results from 21 January 2026 (90 points for earlier results); PTE Academic 62 with 61 in writing; and Cambridge C1 Advanced with at least 180.[11] Programme requirements can be higher, so read the entry requirements of your programme.
