About Jönköping University

JU was set up in 1977 as the state university college Högskolan i Jönköping. In 1994 the Jönköping University Foundation was founded with three schools; the new campus opened in 1997.[5] Today the institution is run by the Foundation, and JU’s facts page refers to its Foundation Governing Board and to SEK 834 million in state funding for the Foundation in 2025.[1]

JU has five schools: Health and Welfare; Education and Communication; Jönköping International Business School (JIBS); Engineering; and Jönköping University Enterprise.[1] The campus lies in the city centre, on the western shore of Lake Munksjön.[5]

Not a state university: JU is run by a foundation, but it does receive state funding, and students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland pay tuition as at other Swedish institutions.[1][7]

How is Jönköping University ranked?

The Times Higher Education profile places Jönköping University in the 701–800 band of the World University Rankings 2027. THE’s data for that edition counts 6,994 students, which is a different count from the 15,209 registered students JU reports; the sources do not explain the difference.[2] Wikipedia, written earlier, gave a THE band of 601–800 for the 2024 edition.[5]

We could not confirm a position in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published on 18 June 2026. JU’s facts page names the Financial Times ranking, the QS Business Master’s ranking and ShanghaiRankings GRAS among its rankings but gives no positions.[1] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. The tuition fee includes tuition, emergency insurance and the Student Union fee. Pathway, summer programme and other fees are on the individual programme pages.[3]

Paying and refunds

The fee is paid in instalments, one per semester, by bank transfer. The first instalment must be paid before the Swedish Migration Agency will process a residence permit application, and until then an offer of admission is preliminary.[3] If you cancel before the start of the programme within the dates shown on the fee page, JU refunds the fee minus an administrative fee of SEK 7,500 and bank charges.[3]

Application fee

Applicants from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland pay SEK 900 (about EUR 80) per admission period. It is not refundable.[3] Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland are exempt from application and tuition fees.[7]

JU Scholarship

JU awards a limited number of scholarships worth 10 % to 30 % of the tuition fee for the bachelor’s or master’s programme you are admitted to. Selection is on academic merit, with an emphasis on academic excellence.[4] The scholarship is not automatic: you must submit a separate online form with your study application number, a one-page letter of recommendation in English and a personal statement of up to 200 words. It is deducted from the tuition invoice and is open to new applicants only.[4][3] For living costs see our Study in Sweden guide.

How do you apply to Jönköping University?

JU recommends its own JU Direct Application for both bachelor’s and master’s programmes because it can process applications faster. Applications are handled on a rolling basis, and a programme can close early if it fills up.[8] For master’s applicants, universityadmissions.se is needed only if you apply for a Swedish Institute scholarship.[9]

  1. Find a programme and check its requirements and the English requirement.
  2. Apply online through JU Direct Application and upload your documents as PDF files.
  3. JU processes the application once it is complete; a web-based interview may be part of admission, and JIBS may reserve some places for a special selection.
  4. If you are admitted, accept the offer through the link in the email. Fee-paying students then receive an invoice for the first semester.[8]

Documents for a bachelor’s: a diploma qualifying for university study in your home country, transcripts, proof of English proficiency, a passport copy and a letter of motivation.[8] For a master’s: a bachelor’s diploma (or proof of enrolment in your last semester), transcripts, proof of English, a passport copy and a letter of motivation; GMAT, GRE and CFA are not required, although a good score may help for some JIBS programmes.[9] Non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants pay the SEK 900 application fee.[9]

We give no deadlines or application windows here because they change every year. Check the application pages for your intake.

Which English level do you need?

All applicants need English at the level of Swedish upper secondary English 6 (English Level 2).[6] Accepted tests:

  • IELTS Academic: overall 6.5, no section below 5.5. IELTS General Training and the indicator test are not accepted.
  • TOEFL iBT: for results from 21 January 2026, a total of 4.5 on the 1 to 6 scale and no section below 4; for results up to 20 January 2026, a written score of 20 and a total of 90. A result cannot be older than two years.
  • Duolingo English Test: overall 125, accepted only through the JU Direct Application.[6]

You may not need a test if, for example, you completed upper secondary English instruction equivalent to English 6, hold a Bachelor of Engineering, Technology, Science or Computer Applications from a recognised Indian university, hold a bachelor’s degree with English as the main subject, or have 60 higher education credits taught in English from a listed country.[6] The same national scale is described by University Admissions; for master’s programmes most require English 6, a few English 5 or 7.[10]
