Linnaeus University is a public university with campuses in Växjö and Kalmar in southern Sweden. It was formed in 2010 when Växjö University and Kalmar University College merged.[1] Its Växjö campus page gives about 44,000 students, roughly 28,000 in Växjö and 16,000 in Kalmar; Wikipedia gives about 16,000 full-time equivalent students, so the counting basis differs.[1][2]
Citizens of countries outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland pay application and tuition fees.[3] The fee depends on the programme: the two master’s programmes we read show amounts of SEK 62,900 and 251,600, and SEK 62,500 and 250,000, without labels on the page.[4][5] We could not confirm a QS World University Rankings 2027 position.

About Linnaeus University
Linnaeus University operates in two cities, Växjö and Kalmar. According to its Växjö campus page, the Växjö institution started as a branch of Lund University in 1967, became Växjö University College in 1977, received university status in 1999 and merged with Kalmar University College in 2010 to form Linnaeus University.[1] It is named after the botanist Carl Linnaeus.[2]
The Växjö campus has 76 lecture rooms and about 3,700 student apartments, according to the campus page. The Kalmar campus at Universitetskajen in the city centre opened in 2021.[1][2]
How is Linnaeus University ranked?
We could not confirm a QS World University Rankings 2027 position (published 18 June 2026) for Linnaeus University. QS blocks automated access to its site, and none of the sources we read named a Linnaeus position, so we give none.
The Studyportals page “Sweden University Rankings 2027 | SP Meta Ranking” places Linnaeus University 16th among Swedish universities. This is a different ranking from QS.[7] Rankings differ by publisher and year, so treat one position as one view. How we compile rankings.
What can you study at Linnaeus University?
Wikipedia lists four faculties (Arts and Humanities, Health and Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Technology), a School of Business and Economics and a Board of Teacher Education.[2] Two English-language programme pages we read show the format:
- Marketing, Master Programme: 120 credits (two years), Växjö, entry requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration with at least 30 credits in marketing plus English 6.[4]
- English Language and Literature, Master Programme: 120 credits (two years), entry requires English 7 and additional proof of English proficiency.[5]
For a country overview see the Study in Sweden guide.
How much does Linnaeus University cost?
Citizens of countries outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland must pay an application fee and a tuition fee. The university states that the fee per semester is the same regardless of individual course fees and that the first payment covers 30 credits.[3] LNU’s general tuition-fee overview page blocked our access, so we show programme pages instead. Each programme page states the fee for its intake.
| Programme (120 credits) | Amounts shown on the page (SEK) |
|---|---|
| Marketing, Master Programme (page of 23 Sep 2026) | 62,900 and 251,600 |
| English Language and Literature, Master Programme (page of 23 Sep 2026) | 62,500 and 250,000 |
Neither page labels its two amounts. In both, the larger figure is four times the smaller, which fits a 120-credit programme paid in 30-credit instalments, but the pages do not say so; check the label on the programme page you apply for.[4][5]
Paying and scholarships
For an autumn start, the first-semester payment must have reached the university’s bank account by 1 June; later semesters have their own dates. If the first payment is missed, admission is revoked automatically. Exemptions are handled through the national admissions portal and admission is conditional until the case is reviewed.[3] The English Language and Literature page says tuition scholarships exist, one of them covering 75% of the tuition fee, and that the application fee is due even if you apply for a scholarship.[5] The application fee amount is not stated on the LNU pages we read; the portal’s start page refers to a separate fee page.[8]
How do you apply to Linnaeus University?
Applications to Swedish universities go through the national portal universityadmissions.se.[8] The portal’s first round is recommended for all international students and includes the full catalogue of English-taught programmes; the second round is recommended only for EU/EEA students who need no residence permit.[8]
- Find the programme on the LNU programme page, check entry requirements and fee, and apply through the portal.[4]
- Most applicants from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland pay an application fee; formal exchange students and doctoral students do not.[8]
- Pay the first tuition instalment by the deadline, or admission is revoked.[3]
We give no application deadlines here because they change every year and differ by programme; the programme page shows the current period.
Which language level do you need?
The Marketing master’s requires English 6 or equivalent, the English Language and Literature master’s requires English 7.[4][5] The national admissions service sets these scores: for English 6, IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no section below 5.5, TOEFL iBT total 4.5 on the 1–6 scale (results from 21 January 2026) with no section below 4, and PTE Academic 62 with writing 61. For English 7: IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with no section below 6, TOEFL iBT total 5 with no section below 4.5, and PTE Academic 68 with writing 61.[9]
A letter from your school or university is not enough on its own; exceptions include 60 ECTS credits taught in English in certain countries.[9]
