About Halmstad University
Halmstad University became an independent institution in 1983, when it had a few hundred students and about 40 staff. Its facts page now reports about 12,000 students and around 700 employees, among them 71 professors.[1] Wikipedia gives somewhat different figures for 2022 and 2023 (about 11,800 and 12,400 students), so treat counts as approximate.[2]
The university has four schools: Business, Innovation and Sustainability; Education, Humanities and Social Sciences; Health and Welfare; and Information Technology.[1] Its two research focus areas are Health Innovation and Smart Cities and Communities.[1] The main campus is about two kilometres south of the city centre; the School of Health and Welfare also teaches at Campus Varberg, about 70 km north of Halmstad.[2][6]

How much does Halmstad University cost?
Tuition applies to international students with citizenship outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Halmstad’s fee page lists no amounts; it says that fees vary with the study field and level and refers readers to the programme and course pages.[3] The programme pages we opened did not show an amount either, so we give none. Check the fee on the programme page or in the University Admissions search results before you apply.[10]
- Payment: fees are paid per semester, before each semester starts, for each course you are registered on. Studying more than 30 credits in a semester incurs additional fees.[3]
- Failed courses: fees for failed courses or programmes are not refunded and cannot be applied to another course.[3]
- What is covered: tuition, related academic administration and support services; not accommodation, literature or living costs.[3]
- Exemptions: citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland are exempt, and so are, for example, holders of a permanent Swedish residence permit.[10] Exchange students do not pay for courses covered by their home university’s contract.[3]
- Application fee: SEK 900, paid once and not refundable.[4]
Scholarships
The Halmstad University Scholarship is for fee-paying students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland on bachelor’s and master’s programmes. It covers 25 % or 50 % of the tuition fee and is deducted from the invoice; it does not cover living costs. You must apply to the programme through University Admissions with Halmstad as your first priority, pay the application fee and complete an online scholarship form that you receive by email. Selection is on the merit score of your prior education, and applicants from countries with few applicants are prioritised.[5] It is first granted for one semester and then extended if you complete 75 % of your credits each semester.[5]
The Swedish Institute (SI) also offers master’s scholarships, namely the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals and the SI Scholarship for Pioneering Women in STEM; Halmstad’s page gives no amounts for them.[5] For living costs see our Study in Sweden guide.
